Over the last few months I’ve had the pleasure of working as the marketing director for blues artist Janiva Magness‘ newly formed indie label, Fat Head Records. The label’s first release debut at #5 on Billboard’s Blues Chart and has held the #1 spot on blues radio for much of this summer.

In the latest episode of the Music Marketing Manifesto Podcast, Janiva Magness joins us to give you an artist’s perspective on starting your own label, galvanizing your fan base, and using the Music Marketing Manifesto model to generate some pretty stellar results.

To listen to the interview just go to itunes >> Search “Music Marketing Manifesto” >> and subscribe. The episode should start to download immediately. You can also click here to find the MMM podcast on iTunes.

Or if you prefer, you can also listen right here on the site. Just click the play button below. (Note*** For more player control please listen in iTunes)

If you enjoy this episode then please do me a favor and go to iTunes, click “subscribe”, and leave a rating and/or review. Those ratings and reviews are crucial to the success of the podcast. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

A big thank you to Janiva for joining us in this episode and for being open enough to share some of the actual numbers regarding her mailing list size, budget, and more. You can listen to her latest album ORIGINAL and/or show your support by picking up a copy here <==

And as always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this episode. There’s some great stuff here.

      Hi Shawn,

Glad you enjoyed the interview. Yeah I thought hearing the budgets would really hit home with artists. Thanks for checking out the podcast. Let me know if I can ever help at all.

Thanks for the email. Quick note: I thought I’d like to hear the show & despise all the work involved with itunes, so I looked for you on the Stitcher app. Granted, you don’t need another outlet/hassle of getting on there, etc. I don’t even know how all the podcasts get on there. I did find 2 music marketing podcasts by accident, but not yours. So, check into it. If it doesn’t help you to have that as an outlet, toss this advice in file 13. I’d listen to your podcast if it was available =:-) I spent some time at Leilehua High School, 100 years ago =:-)

      Hi Rich,

Thanks for the tip. I haven’t messed with the stitcher app yet but I just submitted the podcast per your request. Hopefully it shows up in the app before long.

Let me know if I can ever help with anything else.

Thanks again for going the extra mile. I hope Stitcher helps you find a wider audience. I enjoyed the interview, especially the part where you coaxed Janiva into sharing financial details. I am still trying to wrap my head around her marketing budget. Amazing. I hope you can follow through on that for folks who spend their days licking stamps and folding boxes up to send to blogs like mine. I love listening to all the CDs I receive, and those that shone high above the rest – I often wonder why they “disappear”. They have some sense of modern marketing because they have discovered the obscure blogs to send their music to; but there’s obviously other pieces to the puzzle. I think most would be surprised by the marketing budget Janiva discussed; but I know without a doubt her musical integrity and personal integrity helped that budget immensely. Let’s face it, that is an especially fine CD.

Hey john, that’s really a great interview.

I hope I could get some stats about her mailing list and sells. I know I am asking personal information. Her marketing budget was only 300 dollars. Wow that’s great.
