I am wondering if it is a good idea to have a link in my menu for a free download page as well as
promoting the free download with sign up on front page. What do you think?
The more ways you have to get someone on your list the better. The "free" download in a link will get some attention vs just an optin box with the free download. It makes them take some sort of action to actually click on the link, so they're already in "action" mode at that point and may sign up there where they wouldn't have with it just on the page.
Agreed. If I'm understanding you correctly, I do exactly what you are suggesting. I have a link for free music in my blog's nav and also have an opt in box in the side bar. But when driving cold traffic I would personally always send it to a clean squeeze page.

Thanks Bryan for your feedback. John, I actually was talking about on my main website, jazz-elle.com; not the squeeze page template site jazzellemusic.com. I notice on your main website johnoszajca.com you do not have a separate page for free download.
I really like your blinking word free on your home page. Was that done in photoshop and just a .gif file?
Hey Jazzelle,
I was following you. But I thought you were referring to my example site: http://www.johnoszajcamusic.com/blog/
Yes, I think a link to the squeeze page in your nav is smart. I should probably add that to my main site.
That image was done by a designer of mine, but yes, I believe it's an animated gif done in photoshop.
