if I'm in a grocery store, and I see a promotion for something I don't want, I don't take it off the shelf and throw it down the aisle and start swearing. I just leave it on the shelf.
LOL! That is hilarious. I am visualizing that and laughing out loud.
I feel like I need to do a blog post on the online haters out there. It's such a small percentage of people who are jerks, but it can't be avoided. That's the thing with "direct response" marketing.... It gets a response.
I think of it like heckling. It's inevitable that you're going to get an asshole in the room from time time.
Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? I'm probably overwhelming people with TMI! LOL! However, I just thought I'd add another subtlety.
As far as I'm concerned there is no such thing as TMI when it comes to this stuff! LOL! Makes me wish I was a bit more of a nerd myself
I have not been generating a lot of traffic. Your YT strategy is really my first all out campaign so I don't have much to compare to. I did send a broadcast email using FanReach letting my subscribers there know that I was changing my email service provider and that they should sign up by using the link to my new page (squeeze page) I had a 32.1% conversion from that pre existing traffic source. Just my opinion but I believe ReverbNation has become more of an "Artists fanning Artists" site anyway. I had a lot of Artists signed up to my email who, of course never opened a single email. Through that process I found out who my "True Fans" were, that was a good thing but also kind of a dissappointment beings that 32% of 108 is about 35 people
2 days ago after studying your In Detail post (very good by the way) I gathered 2,000 users and I am almost finished sending friend request, should be done tomorrow. I started sending messages after about 250 requests, only using my one YT account "silasdogan" our band account titled The Silas Dogan Band. At 63 messages sent I seem to have hit a snag, one recipient had me blocked and the program seemed to be stuck there saying the limit had been reached but after timming out it began timimg out again...hope I didn't screw things up. I know that you suggest using 5 different "annymous" accounts and posing as "a friend" of the Artist, but I find myself uncomfortable with that, though that may work for you and maybe that is what I should be trying. I guess I have a fear of being "found out" if that makes sense. My messages do follow along the same lines as yours such as "Thanks for the frienship........here's the link....Enjoy" I only have 15 of these and should probably work on another 5 or so, though it is a lot of work trying to think up how to say the same thing differently so many times and that may be the problem I'm having with being in eternal time out. I have closed that part of Tube Tool Box and will restart it tomorrow...fingers crossed.. But I am also concerned that I am sending a "Thanks for the frienship" message ahead of the actual friend request?? After sending 1,530 I only have 316 friends. Unless I have done something wrong I am sending 2,000 mesaages to all the folks I have sent friend requests to...( people could be getting a thank you message before they respond to a friend request and what if they have turned down the friend request and are now recieving a thank you?) I'm just wondering if I'm doing this right? is there a logic I'm missing here?
I appreciate all of your hard work, time and sharing here Charley. You are obviously a very intelligent person and I thank you for your expertise and patience!!
Added note: I see where you say you sample a smaller group to send messages to but when I synchronize frinds and subscibers I got the same number as the gathered....thanks

YouTube will limit how many messages you send out. I suspect that they just stopped you from sending more messages. Tube Toolbox knows that, and waits to try again.

Those were messages that I wrote for folks I was hiring to run my channels. I didn't want them posing as me!! Obviously, I don't want them to say, "Charley hired me to send you messages." The word "associate" sounds weird. I figured "friend" was close enough. Besides, the word "friend" has been kind of bastardized since the advent of social media. You can get a friend these days with a click of a button!! And I'm giving them money...hey, we must practically be married! LOL!

Oh! I see... I guess I missed that or something, I definitely did not mean to offend, but yes that makes perfect sense now
yes the meaning of the word "friend" has changed. At this point I am not in a position to hire outside people, but if I were this would make total sense of course. Tubetoolbox had a pop up message saying that it may be on their end.
I have had 2 subscribers in the past 2 days... 42 Displays 6 Submissions and 14.3% S/D 24 Unique 25% S/UD
Which are the important stats or the ones that should mean the most to me?
Thanks again Charley, you might see if John can pay you for putting up with me LOL

The thing is, I am very new to this stuff and what might seem obvious to some is not quite so obvious to me and probably some others here. I figure that's why I joined this forum, even it my questions are "dumb questions." I'm just lookin for a little help so I can get this direct marketing thing figured out. I appreciate any help I can get and if I learn something I will be more than happy to post and share as well. Thank you
Slow and steady wins the race, Dave. No such thing as a dumb question around here. I'm also learning Charley's strategy for the first time. I've always taken a "content first" approach to you tube, which pretty much involves me putting up a video that's optimized for search results and calling it a day.
I haven't really gotten into the social part of youtube yet, so I'm just as much a newbie as you are at this point... in fact scratch that... you've already tried it out, so you are far more advanced than I at this point. 🙂

First of all, Dave, you sounded like you were a little concerned that you might have offended me. Don't worry about that. If you're going to offend me, you'll have to try a little harder.
Secondly, if you made a mistake with your marketing, don't worry about that either. I've made so many mistakes my head hurts. Almost nothing is irreparable. There are so many people on the internet, and so many ways to get traffic, it's mind blowing. If I lost my youtube channel, it would be a bummer, but it really wouldn't slow me down that much. If I lost my twitter account, that would be a bummer too, but I would just move on. If I blew up my whole email list, that would suck a little more, but I would just rebuild it.
Now for your question. Just make sure that you are messaging your friends and/or subscribers. In tube toolbox, make sure that your recipients are "friends" or "subscribers". Do not message."gathered users". You only want to send friend request to gathered users.
Hope that helps.
I'll leave the strategy to Charlie as this is his system, but for what it's worth dave, a Unique 25% S/UD is a solid start. That shows that you have an offer that works. Now you just need more traffic and of course you need to convert the subs into sales... but you're on the right track.

LOL Thanks Charley, no I was not trying. Yes this helps alot. Actually I was messaging "gathered users" doh! Like I said not everything is obvious so I really appreciate you taking the time to help me. Thanks Bro!
Thanks Steve..thanks John
Hey Charley (or anyone)
YouTube has asked me if I want to monetize my channel…what are your thoughts on that?
I have set my own ad on my videos for a free download
Thanks

Hi Dave. Sorry I missed this. I've received the same email from YouTube. I've decided I don't want other people's ads on my channel. Soo...I guess that answers it! LOL!

Right, after thinking about it I think other peoples ad's distract from what we're trying to do and ads popping may make your YouTube channel less "authentic" or like a real person. And if someone clicks on an ad and leaves your channel how likely is it that they'll come back and check your stuff. Thanks Charley 😀
Those were exactly my thoughts after completing the "monetization" process.
I don't want to giving people a reason to click away from my page once I've
gone to all the trouble to get them there. The link I want them to click on is
in the description of my video to go to my squeeze page.
Hey Charley, since you're kind of the YouTube Guru around here, I have a small question but one that may be important:
Is it YouTube etiquette to subscribe back when someone subscribes to you? Like the Twitter follow thing? Thanks for your time
YouTube is changing. Any thoughts about how these changes will affect this strategy?
Dave Barnett said:

Yes, it's good etiquette, but I rarely follow it. That's just me. I do the very best I can to honor people and be polite, but I just can't subscribe to everyone's channel. I also don't answer messages sent to my YouTube inbox. I answer most emails and tweets, and I "like" facebook posts on my fan page; but I just can't be Superman.

I think YouTube changes the way they do things about every week! It's an ever changing landscape. So, I'm not really sure what changes you're referring to. However, I've been able to adapt to everything that they've thrown at me so far without much loss of time or disruptions in traffic.
Cool, thats the way it is when you're on somebody elses domain for sure but I recently heard they are going to make everyone go to the new page layout which does not show friends, subscribers, comments or just about anything except your videos. I know tubetoolbox is aware of this and they say they trying to keep up with it make their changes accordingly.
Since you are the YouTube guru I thought I'd check in and see if you had any info / advice Thanks Charley
