Hi

I've had a lot of info arrive in my inbox lately about using video within an advertising strategy, so I thought I'd share it hear and see what you make of it.

First of all, a case study of a very young artist who is using YouTube ads to grow  following by piggy-backing on Justin Bieber type established artists:

And then one about facebook video ads. Flo used these as part of a promotional campaign and got well over 1000 views in a few days. The plan was to use the views to create a custom audience for retargeting but she struggled with this, we think because she had used the 'boost post' feature rather than going through the ad manager. The concept seems sound, though and using video must be the easiest thing ever for musicians:

We're more likely to use Facebok video ads again than YouTube ads - what do you think?

Hey Deb, my experience with video ads has been one of getting a lot of views, but a very pour ROI. But admittedly, I haven't spent enough money or time with them to have a ton of confidence in that position. But glancing at the case study, they are saying that each Youtube subscriber cost $2.81. That's too much for an email subscriber, let alone a Youtube subscriber. And I didn't see any mention of sales. But hey, there is certainly value there, so long as you can afford to spend money with no immediate return.

My issue with Facebook video ads is that they call it a view even if the use does not click on the video. It gets called a view when the silent video roll starts. At least last I checked. And when you look at the stats it's very few people who actually watch more than 30 seconds of the video.

But I'd need to play with it more to have a more definitive opinion. For now, my money is best spent on ads that take people to a squeeze page. I can share my video with my subscribers later.
