I've run across what appear to be some great deals on paid email blasts. I'm about to do one, and I will share the results when I'm done. However, I just wanted those of you who are unaware of the possibilities to know that there ARE tightly-niched email lists owned by web masters, etc. Some of these people will send out e-blasts for you if you meet their criteria and are willing to drop some money.
The first one I am going to experiment with is two e-blasts to 50K jazz fans for $150 total cost. As I've checked into it, the people who have used this service are well-known in the industry and unlikely to waste money on junk. The list owner claims an open rate of 60-70%. I find that amazing, but the list does seem well-managed, so I think it's worth a shot. Emails go out a few times a month, and the ones I've seen are well-written, and have good content.
I know I'll get something out of it, so I can't believe I'll lose more than $100. I've spent that on stupider propositions. LOL! But, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think the results might be 50K x 60% opens x 5% click-thru x 30% conversion = 450 subscribers. With my current subscriber value, that many subscribers are likely to bring in $400 in sales. And, again, it's TWO email blasts. Definitely worth the risk to me.
I'll letcha know!
That's awesome Charley. I'd definitely give it a go. I'm EXTREMELY skeptical though about a 50,000 person email list with a 60% open rate. It's almost unheard of. Especially with big lists. But I think it's absolutely worth trying at that price. Email blasts require testing like anything else. Some will be duds and some will be amazing resources. But for that low of a price it's worth trying. I have a regular thing going with someone who has a list of 200,000 in the music biz space. They charge $3000 and I get it at about half because of my regular advertising. So $150 for 50,000 is insanely good.
Love to hear how you found it and if you have any leads for everyone else that you want to share please let us know. Fair enough if you want to keep them to yourself though.
Your post as well as Kat's has made me think that a "resources" forum is necessary here so that people can share opps like this.
Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a little one-on-one assistance so you can ask questions that pertain to your specific goals and get a second, more experienced, perspective? Click here to book a session with me now.
I'll definitely share the resource after I've tried it. I just didn't want to send people to something that might be a dog. 🙂 For 150 bucks, I'm willing to take a gamble that it's as good as she says it is.
Yes, a resource forum would be great.
Just added. See the main forum index 🙂 I think this will be a nice addition. I'll eventually prune it into one easy to read directory.

I'll be looking forward to hearing the results of this one.

I'm a little skeptical as well, so I'm wondering how it went with your test. Besides the open rate, another good metric to track is their overall click through rate. Often they'll give you their highest ever open rate, but if you could get an average that would allow you to make a more precise calculation on your possible ROI.
Just remember that it will come down to your offer and how well it is presented. Is it a text-based ad or a graphic ad? Is it compelling? It sounds like a pretty targeted group for your music Charley...so I hope it works out as well as you hope.
Well, it *was* a bit of a dog. LOL! I got some out of it, and I still have a second email blast left for my $150. I'm not bummed. A learning experience worth $150. But it wouldn't have been worth $1,500 to learn!
Well I'm bummed Charley. I got your blast and was hoping it was going to work out because I was interested in doing that for my artists. Thanks for sharing your results.

Hi Paula! I'm glad this post helped someone, and I didn't even have to use names! LOL!
I'm sure you heard the training that John did on email JVs, so the concept is something that works. Just not *that* one, for me, in the way that I did it. I know that particular person means well, so I'm ok. I still have one more (it's two for $150), and I'll get more traffic. I'm just not going to recover my cost.
Charley, is there any way the next time around you can add or refine targeting criteria? Or had
you already done that?
Charley: I got the email before I saw your post on the forum. I thought "This guy is everywhere!" I thought I was getting re-targeted!

That's hilarious! Thanks for brightening my day!
Thanks for the update Charley. Sorry to hear that one didn't work out. How many clicks did you get?
