Guest Blogging - How Well Does It Work For Musicians?

Hey People:

Sorry to be blowing up the forum today, but I've got another burning question on an issue that I'd love to get peoples' two cents on: guest blogging.

I'm all about traffic generation right now, and what with John's Post-Penguin training video, the podcast interview with Sean Mize, and various non-MMM articles, it seems like guest blogging has a lot of things going for it. You're not taking the time to build your own property or audience, just leveraging someone else's work and (hopefully) funneling a bunch of traffic to your squeeze page.

However, I'm wondering whether this works as well with music as it does in other niches. It seems like many music bloggers are doing it for passion, not for business. The point of their blogs is to get their writing out there to the world, so there's not as much pressure to keep coming up with posts for business reasons. Also, it seems as though the readership for music blogs is by and large just really, really low; my SEO Doctor Firefox toolbar routinely shows daily visitor numbers between 0 and 6 for the blogs I'm checking out.

Maybe it's just my niche (singer songwriter); over the years, I've noticed that way fewer bloggers seem to be writing about some of my soundalike artists than, say, Hot Chip, or LCD Soundsystem, or Crystal Castles or Kanye.

Maybe guest blogging for blogs covering your demographic's lifestyle interests is working better for people? I'm guessing that if you make Chiptune, you might have some luck asking gadget bloggers if they need guest posts.

Anyway, I'd be really interested to hear about it if anyone has had luck with guest posting strategies that they'd be able to share. Thanks!

There is definitly a LOT of traffic out there on music blogs, so don't be dismayed. Music is one of the most trafficked niches on the internet. With that said, there are probably plenty of passion blogs that get no traffic at all. No-depression.com (just as an example gets tens of thousands (I think it's actually hundreds of thousands) of unique visitors each month. Some blogs will get you nothing, others will get you a lot.

A plus though... There are many passion blogs out there that no nothing about SEO but because they have not been fucking with Google they have great quality scores. Write a nicely optimized article and build a few quality backlinks, you might rank really well because of the site's inherent quality, regardless of whether or not they currently get a lot of traffic. Get them a lot fo traffic and then be stoked to have you back.

I still get traffic from blogs I landed a couple years ago. For me, the answer is yes. I haven't been aggressive about pursuing blogs, but they certainly will get you traffic.

Showing my ignorance here:  am I correct in assuming that SEO Doctor will tell me how many viewers a blog has per day (or week, or whatever)?  I'm looking for more places to send articles and want to be sure the site I'm writing for is worth the effort.

What are backlinks and how do you create them?

Finally, I assume the reference to No-depression.com was not intended as a reference to a blog concerned with music.  If it IS a music blog, there's something terribly wrong with my search engine.

Me AGAIN.  Assuming your article is great and is published in an optimum magazine-blog, it´s obviously important to have an author bio/call to action that´s going to be effective.  Does the following seem to you likely to work well (for an article about a flamenco singer:  obviously sentence 2 and 3 will be changed according to the topic of the article).

Thanks for your feedback.

The author, Eve A: Ma, is a filmmaker as well as an author.  She writes about flamenco and many other topics.  A dancer and flamenco enthusiast, she has spent several years in Jerez.  She produces music albums and directs video/film through her company, Palomino Productions.  Get some free music and check out one of her videos by signing up at http://PalominoProDVD-CD.com.

Not sure which SEO doctor you are referring to. There are many things that sort of use that name. Are you talking about the Firefox plugin?

If so, I don't think they will be able to help much. You might try websitetrafficspy.com. Alexa.com can also give you a good indication of a site's authority.

A backlink is just a link to your site. You should probably watch this lesson: https://www.mmmanifesto.com/in.....n-strategy

Nodepression.com is an alt country blog/magazine. What did you mean exactly?

It's fine, but in my opinion it's not that enticing. The goal would be to try and quickly establish your authority and then relate their interest to taking the next step, but in a way that creates desire. I'd probably try something more like...

Eve A Ma is a filmaker, author and Flamenco enthusiast. Watch her Flamenco Music Documentary, "Name of doc", and listen to the award winning soundtrack here: http://PalominoProDVD-CD.com - It's absolutely FREE!

Now obviously I mace up some stuff there because I wasn't clear on the particulars but that is the direction I would go with it. Keep in mind though that this is just my opinion. An author box is just like an ad. It's worth testing until you find the formula that works for you.

I first tried SEO Doctor (the Firefox plug-in) and it wasn't much help.  Did tell me that yahoo.com gets more traffic than my own web site...BIG NEWS!  Then, I tried one of the ones you recommend:  websitetrafficspy.com.  It told me that my main web site (PalominoPro.com) reaches "an unknown number of unique users each month...."  Of course, I'm more interested in checking out the traffic that some of the blogs I write for get, but if that's all it can give me about my own web site, well.... (By the way, I don't know exactly what spiders and crawlers are, so can't evalute the statistics all that well, but my own site's statistics tell me that in the month of July, I got 147 visitors from one of the blogs I write for, plus some from that Chinese referral site, etc., so I DO get traffic...even if some of it isn't "real" traffic.  I also get some traffic...but much less...on my squeeze page.)

SO-any other ideas as to how I can check out the traffic that a blog is getting before I decide whether or not I want to write for it?

Re Nodepression.com....your earlier post had said No-depression.com, and THAT is a web site about depression!

I'm about to check out the lesson about backlinks, and will take your advice (with appropriate modifications) about my author bio/call to action.

Thanks.

Two FYIs:  my site's statistics say I get over 100 views PER DAY on my web site, but I know that figure is inflated because of "spiders," etc., which I can't recognize.  AND websitetrafficspy.com doesn't seem to distinguish an individual blog from the blog host when you search for statistics on an individual blog.

Your site is not showing up simply because it doesn't get enough traffic. You should get some numbers from any site that is reasonably established. The numbers will not be 100% accurate, they estimate my traffic to be about double what it actually is, but it should give you an indication. As mentioned, Alexa Ranking is also an indicator, all be it a more confusing one. There is also some common sense involved. Just looking at the site and seeing how regularly they post and how much social activity (comments, etc) are on each post will give you an indication.

Re Nodepression.com....your earlier post had said No-depression.com, and THAT is a web site about depression!

Ah, if that was typed somewhere then it was a typo.

Sounds good. All the best.

Yes, stats from your host will be off wildly because of spiders. You would want to install Google analytics or some other tracking tool to get an accurate gauge.

AND websitetrafficspy.com doesn't seem to distinguish an individual blog from the blog host when you search for statistics on an individual blog.

Not really sure what you mean there. The totals they are giving you are their estimates for how much traffic the site gets. But again, they are just estimates. There are other similar traffic estimators out there if you don't like that one.
