Who does Beth remind you of?

Hi

My daughter, Flo, is about to release some tracks of Beth's on her 'Angry Baby' label. The tracks are being mixed and mastered right now, but while that is happening, she's been thinking about how she would fill in the gaps in the 'if you like xxxxx you'll love Beth' sentence.

Can you help, please?

Here's a link to a (very informal!) recording on Soundcloud:

this is isn't one of  the tracks that Beth has recorded for release, but it gives you an idea of her vocal style. Her genre spans from soft ballads via popular classical to sacred music

Any advice to help Flo to 'locate' Beth's style and brand would be very gratefully received.

Hi Deb,

Congrats on your daughter's pending release.

Keep in mind that the example I often use of "if you like xxxx then you'll also like... is just a very basic example, The more you can get away from that while accomplishing the same thing, the better.

Some of the better one's I've seen are a long the lines of...

Miss the crunchy guitar sounds of xxxx, then check out xxx.

or...

Tired of the same old boring rock music, check out...

I'm paraphrasing there but you get the idea. Focus on the experience more than just making basic artist comparisons. If you can do it without mentioning a specific artist, even better.

As for a comparison with your daughter, artists like the cowboy junkies maybe come to mind. But that has a lot more to do with production, in that what I'm hearing on the sound cloud page has a real haunting, echoy quality, sort of like the Trinity Sessions. But I'm not so sure that production alone would qualify this as a crossover amongst fans. Possibly though. Genre wise it strikes me as a little more classic female singer songwriter. A genre I'm not super versed in. The production of these tracks is really defining the sound for me. But I could imagine different production giving her a very different sound.

The track "you take my breath away" reminded me of a Bangles ballad. But that's so off that I don't think it will do you much good. Hopefully someone who knows the genre better can pipe in.

Thanks John

Flo is my daughter, Beth (the singer here) is her friend and Flo is going to release some tracks for her.

Thanks for the tips about how to frame the comparisons, that's great food for thought. The 'sounds like...' also helps Flo with her targeting on Facebook etc

The Bangles...now that takes me back!

If anyone else has any ideas that would help, Flo would be very grateful.

Thanks again

Deb x

PS Did you have some website issues on Friday? We struggled to log in mid-afternoon UK time, but it all seemed to get resolved  by early evening.

Hi Deb,

I'm hearing a little Sarah MacLaughlin.  Possible even Sheryl Crow or even Fleetwood Mac/ Stevie Nicks.

Just like John said, I'm not super knowledgeable about female singer/songwriter genre either.  There could be fairly many more well-known artists to compare, beside the 3 rather famous ones above.

Good luck!

Thanks Steve, that's really helpful.

You've identified a few that we hadn't thought of, which is very refreshing!

Hi Deb,

Sorry for confusion there. Glad Steve was able to offer some helpful suggestions. And yes, we did have some server issues. But all is resolved now.
