My band, Sunspot, just launched a podcast where we discuss how paranormal topics in the entertainment world and then have a new original song in each episode.

It's called "See You On The Other Side: A rock band's journey into the afterlife, UFOs, entertainment, and weird science" and we're doing twice a week until the end of the year. http://othersidepodcast.com

Anyway, just seeing if anyone has tried that before and might want to share tips on promoting, we've done podcasting before as a band travelogue/video blog for several years and that was fun, but we thought this might be a good way of driving traffic to our new music plus it's a lot of fun.

I'm still working on the funnel for it. We just released a new EP last night too and I'm working on getting the new squeeze page together for it. We made our music free to download on Bandcamp for the past couple of years, but I'm going to move to only have the three newest songs of each EP free and then have all of our other tracks be a buck.

I think with our band, since we have a lot of songs, we struggle a little bit with finding the right funnel because we want to focus on promoting the new music, but it's not a traditional album, I've found our physical sales have decreased in the past year since we've moved to doing three song EPs every 3-4 months. It's been wonderful creatively, but I don't think we've quite figured out a great way to market it yet.

Hey Mike,

Yeah, that's interesting that sales have been down with EPs released regularly as apposed to albums released a bit lesson often. I'm not surprised by that.

As far as podcasting goes, I'd personally approach it like this...

  1. Get the podcast on iTunes so that people can discover you that way.
  2. Make sure the podcast title and description, as well as the episode titles, descriptions and meta tags are all keyword targeted.
  3. View your music like it was a sponsor of the show almost and make regular pitches throughout so that people know where they can download your latest single (or whatever) free.
  4. I'd probably also make a squeeze page for the show and offer access to the podcast archives (a simple download page will do it) as well as alerts of new episodes. On the squeeze page I would make no reference to the fact that they can find it on iTunes. I'd also pitch this page within the show.
  5. I'd target people who listen to Coast To Coast AM (for starters) and run Facebook ads in front of them, advertising the squeeze page for the podcast.
  6. I'd send out emails to the list whenever there was a new episode, and while I wouldn't over do it, I'd slip in the occasional promotion of your music to that list. Three day sale, kind of stuff.

I think this is worth trying. You can use the affinity for the topic to build a bond with your listeners and then leverage that bond to sell music. Just be authentic and cool, and offer great content, and people should be more than happy to show support. Let us know how it goes.
