Do any of you have You Tube Channels? Have you had any success using it to promote your music? I have several, the first I started almost 8 years ago, another I just barely started. Some videos were successful, most were not. How about you, any luck?

Hey Doug,
Yes, I do. https://www.youtube.com/sorenbebe
I have been working a lot on linking all my videos to my newsletter and I do get some signups that way.
For me it's also a big part of my promotion and I embed my youtube videos all over on my homepages etc.

When contacting promoters and venues it's great to have a live video to show.

Hey Doug,
Yes, certainly. I have a few. I have had success ranking videos and driving traffic, but for me the work to return ratio is just not worth it (at least as a primary focus) when paid advertising is just so easy by comparison. The biggest issue with youtube, that most people don't tell you, is that in the music space the click through rate tends to be really bad. So while you can get a lot of views, it's not always so easy to turn that into subs. Still, there is no reason for it not to at least be part of your content creation strategy.

John,
It's the same for me. You Tube is certainly a part of driving traffic, but definitely not my main contributor. Facebook ads have had the best result for me as well.
What's interesting is, a few years ago You Tube was my main traffic generator. People were looking up a famous artist and finding my song instead, because the title of my song is similar to the name of the artist they were searching for. I was getting thousands of views as a result, and because it was a similar style of music I was also getting about 1 mp3 download per 100 views. Then the infamous Penguin update came along and killed it, and it hasn't gotten any views since. I find that happens a lot with my music. Certain things get views because of unintentional associations, like having a title similar to a popular movie that just came out. Whatever works I guess.

Yeah, for sure. That can work. the only issue there with Youtube is that view time is a big factor in ranking, and so when people land on one song, while looking for another, you get a lot of initial views and a good ranking, but if those people don't watch that much of the video because it's not what they were looking for it can hurt your ranking and then suddenly you drop way back. It's possible that's what happened with you that time you referenced. But as you mention, it could have been Penguin as well.
