"On Friday, Google’s Matt Cutts reported through Twitter that an adjustment to Google’s search algorithms looks to remove domains featuring low-quality content even if their site URL matches search queries. The move ensures that users will find relevant information and content through Google search, penalizing sites that don’t offer their visitors value."

From Matt Cutt's (Google's head of web spam)

“Minor weather report: small upcoming Google algo change will reduce low-quality “exact-match” domains in search results.

“New exact-match domain (EMD) algo affects 0.6% of English-US queries to a noticeable degree. Unrelated to Panda/Penguin.”

Waiting to see how this shakes out. But Google is now coming in from both sides when it comes to SEO. Making it hard for those that don't optimize as well as those who do. So what do they want webmasters to do? My guess... advertise with them. The always fun game of SEO.

Just wanted you guys to have the update.

Thanks, John. I will never advertize with Google. I've tried, and they've made it clear they don't want me (based on the hoop jumps). MS/Bing is still a joy to work with. And I like their search engine too.

Funny thing. My squeeze had been fluctuating between #3 and #5 mostly on Google for "smooth jazz download." Now it's at #6 and the #1 site doesn't even have smooth jazz downloads. It's Pandora, for crying out loud. I mean -- I love Pandora and all, but what the...?????????

I'm still working on my blog, it's doing ok, and I hope it will eventually do well. It's still in it's infancy. My authority site isn't off the ground yet, but I'm certain it will do well because I have a lot of support from those who have clout in my niche. If nothing else, I'll get traffic from free advertizing.

C'mon Bing! Push 'em back! Way back! Way back!

Amen. I really used to think Google was a great company. I too find myself really rooting for bing. I really wonder what is going on in Google's collective head. I'm thinking they've become the teacher who dismisses the students complaints as "if they liked me it would mean I wasn't doing my job". If so, I think they've really miscalculated. It'll be so interesting to see how things play out with them over the next 10 years.

I'm not against this update if it does what it's supposed to do and culls the thin sites that are only using the URL to rank for a competitive key phrase; it could get rid of a lot of crap out there...

But of course, each time Google makes a change there seems to be a lot of innocent bystanders, so we'll see what happens. I don't think this is anywhere near the havoc that was caused by Penguin, or is it just me?

Hey guys, I'm by no means the worlds biggest SEO expert, but I didn't see much of an impact from this update, nor have most of the guys I've spoken to. But it did effect many out there. So it still seems that an EMD can help quite a lot, so long as you add a decent amount of content and fit the ever changing profile Google is looking for. Personally I think they are losing the plot with these changes. Everyone I know in SEO is now more focused on black hat stuff than ever before. Google has just made it unsafe for people to invest all that time and effort into an authority site like they supposedly want.

One positive though is that music related terms are typically considered to have low commercial intent. And we will likely get away with more than most.
