Would you like a producer to evaluate your song, production, and mix?

Hi guys,

A producer that I have worked with many times over, (who has produced everyone from Def Leppard to Tom Waits), is developing a consulting service of sorts and I'm considering getting involved with it on the marketing side. But I could use your advice.

Essentially I'm just trying to discern what the interest level is in this...

Here's the basic idea...

With home production becoming more and more the norm, a lot of people are making generally good records that lack certain level of polish that often means the difference between sounding like an amateur or a professional. There is a reason record producers get thousands of dollars per track. The problem is that... umm, the cost thousands of dollars per track.

So what if you could hire a producer on a more of a consultant bases for a fraction of the cost?

The producer In question (keeping his name out of it for the moment) is planning on creating a service in which you submit a song and get back a detailed worksheet critiquing the song, production, and mix. He'll give detailed feedback on what works, and suggestions of how you can improve the track where needed to that it can be more effective in the market place. Real advice on how you can do a few simple things to improve your recording from a very accomplished producer.

The idea is that in situations where you might not be able (or want) to afford 4k per track, you could at least pay a small amount for a little insurance before spending thousands of dollars promoting our album.

The price for this service will potentially be $97 per track and would get you a one - two page worksheet/response (on average).

Is this something that you would find interesting? Just looking for a little feedback before diving in.

Your two cents is appreciated.

Hi John, A producer that has worked with Tom Waits sounds real good to me. But as you know, for you to get a fair idea of the real interest in this project, you would have to show the template of the detailed worksheet that would initially be proposed (all the while recognizing the fact that such a template would be perfected with time and experience - just like funnels).

Keep us posted.

Phil

Hey Phil,

Totally, examples and even free workshops will most likely be part of it. But the worksheet is really just a write up. It's basically like paying for consulting. Much like people might hire me to chat for an hour about their plans just to make sure they are approaching things correctly, the producer in question will spend time with your track and give you a detailed assessment of where he thinks the track stands and what can be done to improve it. You would be paying for a seasoned ear to weigh in on what you have for $97 instead of paying the several grand one would normally pay to have him produce the track.

I'm just trying to gauge if this is a service that interests people, in theory.

Hey John, this is something we've done at Broadjam with something called Pro Reviews with a price range from 37.50 to 150 per track. We've got some great producers and songwriters and tt's been somewhat successful, but not wildly. Most people use it as a way to check with music supervisors and publishers to see if the sound quality of the song is good enough for licensing. I thought they'd use it for specific technical questions, but really the only thing people seem to care about is the validation or what kind of movie or audience their song might be good for.

What I might use the service for is to get feedback of the demos that I create before going into the studio. If I could send in a demo and then get some ideas and feedback on ways to record it to make it awesome (on everything from recording tips to the bridge to harmony vocals in the last chorus, etc...) then it might be useful. But what am I going to do with tips on a finished product (which is where I think you'll find most musicians, especially the ones who will spend that $97 on the service)?

Anyway, I've marketed something very similar to a website with tens of thousands of members who are used to spending money on online services and the response was tepid. Just wanted to share my experience with you. But if I could get that producer to review ad help on my demo (or even better a bunch of demos and then make a less-detailed report of the tracks that I should record) that's a service that I might use.
