I'm working on a membership site, and I've dug up pretty much every scrap I have in my archives and I think I have real value to offer people now. But of course it's vital to use this a way to create a community around my music, so I think it's very important to provide some sort of communication gateway on my membership site.
So does anybody have recommendations? Buddypress looks promising - anybody use that? I'm not that keen on using an oldfashioned forum for this, because anything that structured seems like it would be a bit weird for this purpose.
Anyway, any input would be greatly appreciated.
Communication is great. But my concern with things like buddypress, forums, or any kind of public chat that is always available is that when most artists are just getting rolling they don't yet have a large enough community to keep the feeds looking lively, which can be uninspiring. Instead you might simply have a comment form below content, or even just have the occasional live chat or internet concert, so that you are communicating with them from time to time, but you don't run the risk of creating a public ghost town.
Then, once you have a few hundred members and you know there is a community there, you could introduce something like a forum or whatever platform appealed to you.
That's my two cents anyway. But there is no real right or wrong answer here. It's all about just creating an environment that best suits your personality and the actual relationship you have with your fans.

That makes total sense, and I was sort of concerned about that myself.
I'm going to look into Buddypress a bit more, to see if I could use that for comments, and then morph it into something bigger later on, as you suggest. If I could expand on what I'm already using, that would be ideal, of course, rather than needing a new plugin.
Anyway, I'll start with comments and Hangouts/live shows, and expand later, when it makes sense.
Thanks, as always, John!
Cool, yeah, I'm not very aware of all that buddypress can do. So if there is a way to use it similarly to comments and then expand that might be cool. Cheers.
