Hi there! So I've taken John's great advice from my train-wreck of a case study (using my old band's album for learning purposes). For my new band, I spent a great deal of time working out our branding story and researching target audiences that would be in line with our music. Last week I started using twitter to target fans and I've had a great response:
-the sign-up form on our band webpage currently has a 29.5% conversion rate
-the sign-up form on the squeeze page presented to each new twitter follower has a whopping 100% conversion rate (16 subscribers from 16 displays in the past 7 days)
Problem is, only 8 of those 16 "subscribers" clicked the confirmation link in their opt-in email message. Is that normal? Should I tweak my "thank you" page to try and improve this?
Thanks!
Tam
Hi Tam,
That's great to hear! And no, that is far too low of a confirmation rate. 10 or 20% is not unheard of. But 50% is too low. What are you using for a thank you page? Have you customized the confirmation email subject line and copy? Doing so can really help. Another option is to turn off the double opt in requirement. I sometimes do this on paid ads where I have run into confirmation rate issues. But I usually leave it on.

Ok thanks John, good to know what the expected rates are. I have optimized the subject line and copy but I tried to be a little cheeky with the language on the thank you page so I'll try switching back to "wait there's still one thing left to do". If that doesn't work I'll turn off the opt-in.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks!
Sounds good. make sure you change the language in the welcome email as well. By default it says you need to "confirm your subscription". That language really scares people. You want to change it to something more like, we just want to make sure we have the right email address, please click to confirm that you would like me to send you a free download. Change the subject line as well.

Ok confirmation rate is looking better now that I changed back to the "there's one thing left to do" thank you page. I had already customized the language in the welcome email, so that wasn't the problem.
But something funny is happening, maybe you can explain? My submissions for one squeeze page are consistently higher than the displays, resulting in a >100% conversion rate. How is this possible? The other webform I have has a normal 30% conversion rate.
Thanks again!
Hmmm, that is weird. I've seen that happen when people use themes that strip out code from the aweber script, but not with my theme. It would be less weird if it was happening across the board. I'd try resetting the stats on that one form and seeing if it continues. If it does, contact aweber and find out why.
happy to hear your confirmation rates are improved and that you are converting subs at 30%. Good job.
