Hey Y'all,
I was lucky enought to be one of the beta testers for the Viral Music Player that John and Scott James came up with, and I just wanted to let you know that this thing kicks some serious butt!
For various reasons I have been on the road quite a bit lately, and when I am home, I am spending almost every free minute trying to finish up my next CD, so I really haven't had time to put into things like the insiders circle, twitter, Facebook, etc etc, and I almost felt guilty that I didn't do more right away with the viral music player, but now I'm glad I did so little, because it proved how well it works!
I set up the viral player and put it on a blog on my website home page, and did one tweet about it on twitter. That was it, absolutely nothing else. I immediatly got a huge spike in new twitter followers, and I am still getting several new followers every day. I don't have a huge following yet on twitter, because I have been only been on twitter less than a year, but since using the viral music player my followers have increased by over 20% in just 2 weeks. As soon as my CD is finished, and I can get back to internet marketing, guess what I am going to rip into first!
For those of you that didn't get in on the testing, I highly recommend that you get it as soon as it is available. I understand the cost is going to be ridiculously reasonable!
I would be interested in hearing what results the other beta testers got. Also, John, seeing as how I am still getting very impressive results after I sent you my video testimonial, would you like me to do an update? I didn't realize at the time I made my video that my following would still be growing by 20%!

That's awesome Greg. make sure you go in and create the new updated player. It's 1000% better. Thanks for helping us with the beta test.

I sure will John! I'm just wrapping up a new song for my CD, and I will use that for my next song on the viral music player. I'm really curios to see how it goes when I send out a notice to my mailing list about the new song, and they use the viral music player to hear it

Just a quick update on the Viral Music Player.....since I set it up on my website and did that one tweet about it, my Twitter followers have now increased by 30%! Three weeks later, and I am still seeing results every day. This thing is awesome!

Agreed, I just tried it out tonight and I think it's fucking great. I put it on my band's podcast blog - http://www.sunspotroadmania.com
Things that I like -
1. it's fairly compact, the Viral Music Player logo is unobtrusive.
2. Share to unlock the player is ballsy. I'm interested in seeing the share rates of people that shared it just to hear the music vs. people that shared it to download.
3. Simplicity.
Things for improvement -
1. Add the picture of the band or album art instead of the EQ
2. Add a marker on the play bar to show where you are in the song and make it easy to move.
3. Color schemes for different sites, I'm partial to black, but not everyone is, ha!
I told Scott earlier that I'm really interested to see how it's going to play on Facebook, I think that's awesome functionality and something very few other players have.
Currently, I'm using a Noisetrade widget on my Onesheet (which I'm using as my domain right now until I find a permanent solution) for emails for MP3 downloads and I'm using Topspin for email list management (which sucks for email list management , it was a cost saving move but I know, I know, I'll be moving to a better solution soon.) Topspin has a tweet for track and an email for track widget, but it doesn't look as good as this one does. This is a fantastic solution for artists, really great job.
I'm looking forward to the launch and using this on the front page of my site.
Thanks Mike,
I'll add those to the notes for consideration on the next update. We plan to do a big one in a month or two.
And thanks for picking up a copy.

Hey John,
Is there any point in the future you'd think about making one of these for videos? I'm sure the music/film industry would love a product like the VMP.
Hey Andrew, funny you should ask. Yes. Viral Video Player is already done. It should be out within a month. I'll send out an email once it's ready.
Thanks for asking.

That's pretty cool John! I'm sure the Video Player will be as useful as the music player. I have a few new songs just about finished, and I will be putting them out there with the Viral Music Player within the next few days. Judging from my last experience with the Music Player, this will be a big boost for releasing my new CD!

Arrrrgghghh! I'm starting to think I am from some weird planet that has some kind of biological issues with computers!
I want to put some new songs on my website with the viral music player, and I want to use the version that allows people to listen, and only requires them to share if they want to download the song. My problem is that I don't know how to upload a zip file to my website, and how to get the url for the file. I have contacted my host company, and they said I need to do it directly through my website. My website is through Wordpress and I have spent several hours pouring over the Codex tutorials, and anything else that Wordpress has along those lines, and I can find nothing about zip files.
Can anybody PLEASE tell this computer iliterate step by step how to do this!?
I used the original version during the beta testing that didn't need an uploaded zip file, and it kicked some major butt!

Greg,
You're going to have to either use an FTP program like Filezilla (free) or use the File Manager program in your Cpanel control panel (I assume you have Cpanel with whatever webhost you have).
Getting the right URL will depend on where you upload the file to. If you upload to a music folder on your site it would like like:
http://www.gregparkemusic.com/.....lename.zip
("filename" is an example of whatever you called your file that you uploaded.)
This trips me up sometimes as well, because sometimes you can just put in /music/filename.zip and it will work as well (in other words, you might not have to include the full URL).
No matter which way you choose to do this, you need to have your login and password for your webhost to upload the file. It's possible to do this with wordpress IF your file is less than 64mbs as I believe that is the largest upload possible within the Wordpress interface – which is plenty for one song! Once you have the file uploaded into Wordpress you can click on "Media" (from the WP Admin Panel) then "Library" and find your file and click on it. You should then see the URL for the file underneath and it should look something like:
http://gregparkemusic.com/wp-c.....lename.zip
I hope this helps, if not – ask again!
P.S. Both of the file URLS I used as examples have been 'shortened' by the forum software (is my guess), however, if you hover over them you'll see the full details in the bottom left corner of your browser window.
Isn't that covered in a module in MMM 2.0? I think it is... are you a member? If so, you can login as a member and there are step by step video instructions. hope that's helpful...
Thanks Mike and Scott. I got it!! Viral Music player is up and running on my site http://www.gregparke.com

Hey John,
how do you set up the viral music player on your facebook fan page? I can't even figure out how to add an app! I noticed charley did something extremely cool with his: http://www.facebook.com/LangerMusic
Love the big, red free download button and the way it leads to a squeeze page within fb. Is that something you showed us somewhere or is that Charley's clever device?
Would love to know how to do that!
Julianna
Hey Julianna. There are tutorial videos in the members area that show you how to do it step by step. You will need to instal an app but the video shows you how.

Hey Y'all,
Just a quick note about my experience with the Viral Music Player.........
During the beta testing I was blown away by the results, but to be honest I have been a bit disappointed with the results since I officially put the player on my website, and I am pretty sure I know why.
When I used the VMP in the beta testing, visitors were required to "share" before they could actually listen to the track, and as a result I got very good responce. I personaly felt like this was a bit too agressive, so when I added the VMP to my website, I decided to give visitors a chance to hear the song first, and then share if they wanted to. Well, I guess they don't! I have recieved emails saying they love the new songs, but since they get the reward before the action, there isn't any real motivation for them to share, is what I am thinking.
I wanted visitors to my website to be able to hear my music without having to take any extra steps, because I often use my website to help book future gigs, and I didn't want to scare anyone off from listening to my tracks by having to take those extra steps. I am re-thinking that now!
I also have an Electronic Press Kit that pretty much has the same basic info as my website, but is really geared more for booking gigs, rather that a place for fans to visit....Duh! So, I am going to put the VMP on my press kit, with the option of sharing the track after you have heard it, and change the VMP on my website so you have to share it before you can hear it, like it was during the beta testing.
Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Hey Greg,
Yeah, it's funny. There was a lot of resistance from musicians who felt that the share to listen was too aggressive and so they went with the share to download. As a marketer I totally didn't expect this as it seemed to me that the no brainer option was share to listen. In fact share to download was actually just an after thought because someone suggested it. Turned out to be what 90% of people are using.
With that said, our most successful user out there who has had thousands of shares is using the share to listen. Keep in mind, you can still give them the download as well after they share.
It's all in the way you word it. If you don't give any set up and ask for a share to listen it is a bit aggressive. But if you make it part of a fun offer and tell people what you're doing, it's not at all. Especially if you offer the download as well. They can either pay or click a button.
With all of that said, we are hearing from a lot of folks who are having great results with the share to download player as well. But from a conversion standpoint I don't see how that can be better than share to listen.
Also keep in mind that sooner or later the traffic is likely to drive up. You do need to stoke the fire so to speak wth new traffic from time to time. How fast depends on how naturally "viral" your stuff is.
Also remember that there is player type C that is just a normal player. That might be what you want to use for industry folks. You don't want to require industry folks to jump through any hoops.

Hey John,
Well, that makes me feel better to know that I'm not justa freak, and that other musicians were as timid as I was! I can't wait to get my new CD finished, so I can get back to tearing into this stuff and becoming more of an aggressive marketer. This is a perfect example of the old saying: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results. I know I am still somewhat stuck in that rut, but once the new CD is done, the shit is going to hit the fan, so to speak! This is going to be a good year!
