Squeeze page feedback?

OK, so I've been fiddling around with my squeeze page a bit, and I've come up with a pretty nice look for it, I think (I decided to try something different than the MMM theme - mainly because I have this need to personalise everything), and I've worked very hard on the copy. But now I'm thinking I may have oversold myself a bit. I'm running a video ad right now with some of the same copy (looking to create a custom audience), and saw a comment to that effect. Not that I'm putting too much stock in comments on Facebook, but I'd like a second opinion. Also, if somebody spots anything else that I should change, I'd love some feedback. I'm still a couple of weeks out from actually launching my album, so I won't be starting any cold traffic generating FB ads yet, but when I do I'd like to have my squeeze page up to snuff. Better to suss out any glaring problems now, rather than after I start spending money.

Anyway, please give me your honest feedback.

The squeeze page is located at http://onebadday.band/free-songs

Thanks!

Hey Eyvindur,

My honest opinion is that I am not crazy about the layout or the fact that you use video. I actually personally think both are well done. The site technically looks good and the video does a good job of making the case of who you are. But... I found my attention was completely spread out when I landed on the page and I had to do a lot of scrolling. I actually opened the page, walked away for a minute and came back to view it and - forgetting what I had opened - I had no idea what I was looking at and closed the page again. Then I saw the forum post and went back to it. The MMM theme is fairly simple and many would say ugly. But that is to some extent by design. It's not that your page has to be plain or ugly. It doesn't at all. But in my opinion it should be focused and I should get all of the key info without needing to scroll. I also don't like wide page designs. Many studies have been done on how the reader gets fatigued, the wider the page is.. I know that;s how I personally feel.

And while I like the content of the video personally, I don't normally use video because it tends to satisfy to much curiosity and as a result, the visitor starts throwing up resistance. I have seen video work, but more often it hurts. It really requires testing to pull off.

If it was me I would keep your branding elements but narrow the page and stick with a more concise format to the page. Something more similar to the MMM theme. At least to start. Then you can A/B things. You may very well be able to beet the MMM format. But those elements I use/teach are there because they are pretty proven.

Hope that helps. And keep in mind that it;s just one guy's opinion.

Thanks for the reply, John. That makes a lot of sense. I chose that layout because I thought it would work better on mobile, but I could be totally wrong about that.

The reason I went with video was that I showed a squeeze page idea (a different design back then) to a friend of mine who said he would never read that much text if he clicked an ad for music - he would want to be able to hear a sample straight away. He's not dyslexic or averse to reading - he's just a pretty busy guy, so I figured this might work.

But I'm sure you would know much better, so I'll rethink some stuff.

But do you think the copy works? I might rearrange some of the text in a different layout, of course. The line in the still screen in the video was originally my headline.

Also, is video a better idea on upsell pages? Or should I avoid it altogether?

Oh, one more thing.

If I change the squeeze page to the MMM theme, do you think it would hurt anything to keep my other funnel pages in this wide format? The sales page, upsell, etc.? Or would I be better off using the MMM theme for everything?

I hear you. I come up against the "my friend said he would never respond to this" resistance a lot. It's actually something I talk about a fair bit. If you took my ugly squeeze page and asked 100% if they liked that better, or my "official site" better (which also has an opt in offer on every page... Nearly 100% of people polled would pick the fancier site. However that site converts at 4% and my squeeze page is generally over 25%. The bottom line is that people don't always act consistently with what they say they will.

You really need to just test things before you can come to any conclusions about any of it. Video can work. But in my experience it hurts a lot more than it helps. It just depends on all those little variables. To some extent sales copy is like writing a hit song. There are a lot of songs that sound like hits but never connect with the masses. It's the combination of a bunch of tiny details that are hard to quantify all coming together to cause an emotional response in an audience. I can tell you what generally works, but each person is different and fr every rule there is an exception. My comments are all general truths about what converts and what doesn't, but definitely not absolutes.

Testing and math are the only real ways to know.

To answer your other question, If you were to change one aspect of your funnel I would probably change all of it. I am in no way trying to stress that you should use the MMM theme, but those dimensions, the layout, and the approach do work over and over again, so at least using that as a starting place can help you more quickly start narrowing things down. But I see no problem with changing some of the look/color/font/etc up to be something more consistent with your brand.

Hope that helps and keep us posted.

Awesome. That all makes a ton of sense. I'm almost ready to launch the album, so I'll get started on a new squeeze page on a new site. I think I'll just try to bring that and my current landing pages close to each other in appearance (I can easily modify things like page width on my funnel pages), if only to simplify and speed things up, since I've already got everything set up.

But just to reiterate: You don't see any glaring copy mistakes?

As always, thanks for the fantastic info.

Cool. Glad that makes sense.

I didn't see anything glaring, but that doesn't mean things couldn't be improved though. Because I wouldn't use video, that would inevitably mean that I would use less copy. So I would probably end up taking what you have any pairing it down, as a starting place. Based on performance I would test and tweak.

Yeah, I'll just use the text on the page, and skip the stuff I added in the video. And I'm aware that I'll obviously need to see how it performs and probably tweak it, but I just wanted to make sure there was no horrible no-no there. 😉

I'll post the new squeeze page once it's up. Been busy with my kids and preparing for a live performance, so haven't gotten it done, but it's coming!

Cheers again.

Sounds good. The only thing I might ad is that I think you could possibly ad something to round out your headline.

I totally get where you are going with "looking for music to drink to" in that I assume you are trying to tap into your audiences affinity for the sloshy crooner sensibilities of alternative singer songwriters such as Tom Waits and Nick Cave, but without making one more small reference to what you mean by "drink to" it could stand out as odd to some readers who don't get that drunken crooner thing and just think you really empathize with alcoholics 🙂

No what I mean?

But otherwise it's a good starting place.

That won't be my headline. I used that there, because I needed something very short because of the layout. My original headline was (mostly ripped off from yours, actually, since we're in a slightly similar market):

"Pour yourself a stiff one, lay back and drink in some free music from one of Iceland's most exciting alternative folk rock artists"

I put that in the video slides instead, but I'll probably put that back in the headline.

I am thinking about trying something about drinking music (probably a better term) for my FB ad copy, though.
