HI, ive been getting some comments from people that join my email list about spotify, like, are you on spotify or i hope your on spotify. I am not, at least not anymore.
MY question is this. How should i respond? tell them im not and the reason why??? no reply??? or?????
Hi Mike,
I generally recommend people release their singles to spotify. It is good to have a presence there. Then, when you get questions like this, you can explain how little Spotify pays, and that most indie artists can't make a living by giving away the entire album on streaming services, and for that reason you have only released your latest single, and make the album available exclusively from your website. But soften that up a bit so that they really understand that you need their support.

Hey Mike,
I have the same question often too. I’d echo John’s thoughts. I find the best policy is to be honest. Explaining how it’s more beneficial as an independent artist to connect with fans through your own website and FB really opens up a dialogue and creates a conversation.
I’ve found that people who ask this are usually interested and are happy to hear how you are trying to make music your career. They have no idea how the profits break down for artists. I’ve had a number of occasions where they have listened and then bought a download following our conversation 👍
Totally agree.
