I actually haven't used either of these yet, but here are a few that I have on my radar.
NoDepression.com - Roots, Americana

These guys are a bit expensive, but really targeted for the right artist. They don't advertise dedicated email blasts, instead you can pay for ads on their site and in an email. You'd really want to calculate the costs against your subscriber value. As I say, I think their prices are too high. But negotiating lower prices is pretty standard with companies like these.
Noise Trade - All genres

Noisetrade will only promote a noise trade account, but you do get the email addresses when people opt in. Though you would need to import. I have not tried them yet either. Dean Fields passed these guys on to me. Thanks Dean.
More to come. Please share any resources you have for email blasts to potential music buyers. I will eventually compile everything into one, easy to read resource.

I've been planning on looking further into NoiseTrade (....been waiting for my daughter to finish her EP, now complete) ever since hearing Tyrone Wells speak at a local music business lecture series here in Salt Lake (soundcheckseries.com). Wells is supposedly the top selling independent musician on iTunes.
He said he bought an ad in the NoiseTrade newsletter for $400 and that one ad turned into 10,000 opt-ins. Not only that, he made $360 from donations (on NoiseTrade you have to give your album/download out for free, but there is a place where people can give donations in exchange for the freebie.)
Bottom line was 10,000 email subscribers for $40.
Of course, the advertising page doesn't mention anything about the newsletter...

Yeah, I've heard about some good results with them. My guess is that they are going down as the site catches on. But I've heard that people still do pretty well.
On that link I provided it does mention a bit about the emails. It's hard to see. For $500 you become a featured artist and get an email mention. I spoke with them about it a week or two ago and they sound like they are pretty booked out for a while. I just submitted the application. I'll report back if I'm able to slide in there.

Been discussing a possible opportunity with http://www.muziboo.com/ - They have almost half a million music fans in their system but they are not segmented into any kind of demographic breakdown. I'm trying to partner up with them and essentially offer them as a paid JV service for people looking to get in front of a lot of people fast. I hope to do a test blast soon. What would a service like this be worth to you guys, per 10,000 emails? If it happens it would be in such a way that you could just send a blast to a small selection. In other words you wouldn't have to pay for all 500,000 at once. You could test a small batch first.

Hmmm...the muziboo site that I'm seeing is a little confusing. Looks like there's a lot of spam posting, and that a lot of the members (?) are from India. Not sure I'd pay a lot to advertise here.
In general, I don't think I'd pay too much to blast out to undifferentiated customers. I don't think I'd need super finely-grained demographics, but would at least like to target fans of my genre.
Hth, and that I answered the question you were asking!

Cool, I appreciate the feedback. I'm planning on running a few test ads first to see what the list can do. The site owners are in India but supposedly the users are from all over the world. But yeah, it will definitely be broad. Still, it's a monster of a list, and for the right price it would definitely make sense to me. We'll see what happens with the test. Thanks fro the feedback.

I'm on Noisetrade's email list, and just noticed that one of the New and Notable artists featured in today's email is Dean Fields.
Nice! Hey Dean - if you're reading this, and don't mind sharing, it'd be great to hear about how well this worked for you....I know a lot of people are curious about the effectiveness of Noisetrade's paid advertising.

10,000 emails? I guess it would depend on how targeted they were. I don't know what the going
rate is but I could risk about $30 on that, I guess.

Thanks for the feedback. the going rate is actually much MUCH higher than that for dedicated email blasts. But given the luke warm interest I think I may just skip this one. Thanks again for the feedback.

I assumed that it probably was higher, but if it were 10,000 fans of The Cure or Depeche Mode
who had recently purchased CD's online, then it would be less of a risk to me and I would be more
confident in paying more. I've paid close attention to your stories where you paid a bunch for
10,000 somethings and didn't get much return.
Yeah, that's all definitely true. There are so few targeted music lists available that I personally think any kind of clear cut music fan list is worth while, but still, your concerns are totally valid. Thanks for the feedback.

I am very intrestested in this, it seems that it could be worth the money if we want to build a list QUICK. Which I'd like to do, been spending ALOT of time on twitter the last 2 months, getting tierd of it. Got 192 subscribers and we are 4 ppl sitting and adding followers and talking to fans like 1-2 hours each day.
Just checking in with this thread again due to the new post...wondering if any of the above commenters have anything to report back on Noisetrade? Would love to hear if anyone has updated experience with them. Dean Fields?

@marcuscarlzon - I decided to bail on the idea of that particular partnership due to lack of interest and an already overcrowded schedule. But if you are looking to build your list fast it might be worth reaching out on your own to a few targeted mailing list. You might find a goldmine.
@radionowhere - @deanfields would need to answer this himself, but I seem to remember him saying he got a ton of subscribers but a huge percentage did not confirm their subscription when he transferred them over to Aweber. Not sure how they converted in terms of sales.
