Hey everybody,
I found an interesting article about the decline of CD's and the rise of digital downloads, with some very interesting statistics broken down by companies that many of us are probably dealing with (CD Baby, Itunes, etc) Here's the link:
What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?
Check out Greg Parke and you’ll have a pretty good idea!
Thanks for sharing the article Greg.

I kind of did a (very informal) study on this as well. I polled friends on Facebook and elsewhere to see whether I could rely on strictly downloadable albums as a means of making a living (vs. creating and selling CDs, which was occuring as pretty expensive a couple years ago). The only people who objected to downloads were graphic designer friends of mine (I'm a trained designer) because they liked going over the layout, liner notes, etc.
Most everyone else said downloading was easier/more affordable, they all had mp3 players, etc. I use Nimbit as my service to manage all that, and it seems to work pretty well (Nimbit allows for CD sales and does fulfillment for merchandise as well).

I think there is still a place for CDs, you just need to make them part of a really special experience. Limited run, limited artwork, signed copies, etc.
As far as Top Spin goes... for the life of me, I cannot figure out what they offer. I've checked out there site, written them, watched videos on youtube, read articles and asked people, and no one gives me an answer beyond an ecommerce solution for musicians.
As far as I can tell they are charging a lot for a shoppingcart, stats,a nd a few other things I can get for free. But as I mentioned, I may totally be missing it.
@Julianna, I know I owe you an email. It's in my very slammed inbox. I'll answer it shortly.

Thanks John! With all the options it's tough to wade through and figure out what's really going to be useful. I think Topspin is positioning themselves as a one stop shop offering easy merch order fulfillment options for the artist and easy purchasing access for fans. I could be wrong about that though! I'm using nimbit for my website store and itunes account but I'm not happy with their store widget. I'm trying to figure out the best alternative. Any opinion on that?
I use 1shoppingcart.com for a lot of my online stores (not just music). They are about $35 a month. You get an autoresponder with that but there autoresponder isn't all that great. Depends what you're trying to do.
