Hey John,
It occurred to me that I've never created an avatar for my ideal fan, for any of the genres I've marketed to. I remember you saying that its smart to literally create an avatar of who you are marketing to, and then keep that image of that ideal fan on your desk or in your mind when writing copy.
I am going to do this, but I want to spend a couple hrs researching other similar artists' fans and my own fans. For example FB Graph Tool, Audience Insight Tool, maybe a survey and definitely common sense, but what else should I keep in mind when doing this?
Thanks in advance John.
Hey Brian,
While it's not something you absolutely need to do, I do think it's a healthy exercise. It forces you to think about how your content is being received, rather than focusing on what you hope to say.
As far as how to go about it, you might refer to the lesson on it. That said, FB Graph search has changed since then and does not offer the same level of connections that it once did. Instead I would stick to the audience insights tool and surveys. With more of a focus on the audience insight tool.

Right on. Which month's lesson talks most about using Audience Insights? Also I'm a little confused on how to use it, can I use it to research an audience of a music page other than my own?
Hey Brian, I just realized it was something I covered in a broader lesson so it;s not in the subject line. I'll have to search the lessons to find it. Back at you a bit later when I have a moment to do that.

Hey Brian,
It's in the "scaling up" lesson. The part about Audience insights starts around the 23 minute mark.

Hey John,
Thank you, cheers. Also, what about the tactic where you type a FB search that reads "people who like so and so's page also like..." and then you see a list of other artists also liked by those fans - is that the FB graph tool, or is that something else?
Hopefully that makes sense.
That's FB Graph search. They have changed graph search since that lesson came out and while you can still do many of the same things, the functionality is a bit limited now. However Audience insights gives you a lot of the same functionality as Graph search, however in a very different way.

Hey John,
ahhh gotcha, thank you. Yes Audience insights is pretty fascinating, geeking out on it a little bit at the moment. One question: I see there's an artist on FB with 112K likes when I go to his page, but when I look him up on Audience Insights it only says the number 31.1K under the "Facebook" column, and it says 29.5K in the "Audience" column. First of all what is the difference between those 2 columns, and why are they both so much lower than the actual likes on this artist's page when I go visit it?
Hey Brian,
Without a screen shot I'm not 100% clear what you're looking at, but I'm guessing this is because you're only looking at a US segment of the audience in insights. If that's not the case then just post a screen shot and I'll take a look.
