Maybe I have missed it, but seems there is little talk on the forum about getting radio play.
I have 2 EP's released - my genre is techno/electro, I am in France, but seems this music has started taking off in the US.
So my question: How do I get my "underground techno" played in US college radio sites who are into alternative music this autumn?
Hey Oly,
It comes up here and there but radio play is a bit on contrast to the direct response marketing model we focus on here. Of course there is nothing wrong with radio play. It's great if you can make it work. But more often than not it's a fantastic way to lose money for an indie artist. I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on funding my own radio campaigns in the past, not to mention the hundreds of thousands labels have spent on my behalf. Without question, if I had known then what I know now, I would spend that money on PPC advertising over radio any day.
I think you are infinity better off if you engage in some geo targeted advertising in whatever markets you would like to eventually crack with radio. THEN, after you are selling albums and have a big list in those markets you can explore radio. It would infinitly increase your chances of making that radio play stick.
But spending money on an indie radio campaign with no real world traction to back it up is just a great way of wasting money. At least in my opinion.

Is there much benefit in getting internet radio play? And specifically, has anyone had any experience with Last.fm? Is it helpful to upload to them? I'm registered with Sound Exchange, so theoretically if people listen to my stuff, I should get some money, right?
Hey Eve,
There are probably others that can help you more with this. I don't focus on radio much at all. I have paid for internet radio campaigns in years past, but never saw any noticeable return. I focus on things that allow me to send people directly where I want them to go via a link. I have not had much luck with anything else in terms of traffic and ROI. That usually boils down to web content creation, PPC ads and email advertising.
