Hi everyone! Just to introduce myself first, my name is Max and i've been in the music industry playing in bands and doing studio stuff for about 15 years. I've also been in a signed band with hundreds of thousands spent on our CD with millions of youtube views and we pretty much went nowhere. I wished i would have seen this stuff along time ago! I have been a member here for a few months and I've just been taking it all in. Ive also been putting together everything i've learned from the MMM3.0 course which has really been an eye opener!
So to get to the heart of the matter, i have a few questions regarding putting it all together for a release. My new band Among The Betrayed (www.facebook.com/amongthebetrayed) has recorded a 5 song EP, it sounds great and the songs have huge potential in the market we are in. i understand most the MMM3.0 concepts with the squeeze pageant such and will be putting it to good use.. This is more of a basic question as in what to do before we release it? Like sending out a press release getting together our signature story and releasing a song in advance for people to download for an email till the EP is out. Just wondering what are ALL the things or MOST the things we should be getting together before we release it? On a side note we will not be charging anything for the EP initially just an email and later down the line offer a live version or additional songs for the the price of the EP after a specific amount of time. Thanks and look forward to learning more!

Hey Max,
Great to see you getting active in the forum.
There is a lot you COULD do, but from my perspective, sales will be in direct proportion to the size of your list. So focus 90% of your effort on building the list and building a relationship with that list. Aside from that, you might start planning out any press or events that you plan to hold after the release. Such as touring, or even online concerts.
Does that answer the question?

Thanks for the quick response. That is basically what we are going to be focusing on, I'm just trying to get everything in order and take the right steps to release it properly. Is there anything else you would recommend before putting it out? Things we will be doing: getting a proper bio/story, putting out a press release, getting reviews to coincide with the release as well as doing all the MMM3 course stuff to build our list.

My only advice is to be thinking about the aspect of your brand that are bigger than the music. Try to cultivate that "story" or in marketing-speak, your unique selling proposition. People tend to follow people/ideas they can express to others in one or two quick sentences...
Bob Dylan: A New York kid that has introduced intellect and modern sensibilities to folk music (for his time).
Guns and Roses: Destructive Punk rock blues band from the streets of Hollywood.
Amanda Palmer: Making connections with millions through social media.
Etc.
What is the story that will unfold throughout your sales process.
Aside from that it's all about the list. Live shows will be a big second.
I think press and radio would be great. But I wouldn't give it more than 20% of your budget or energy. That's just my opinion.

Great thanks for the insight john. We are having trouble trying to cultivate our story though. Do you recommend anyone that could help us with that?

You know, I don't have anyone specifically that helps with branding like that. I've done it in a few consulting calls, but it's really just an interview process where I ask the band to tell their story and pull the threads that jump out and try to condense it. It's really just a personal opinion though, so you guys would have some good insight into who you are at your core. But if you feel stuck and would like to do an hour long consultation just shoot me an email to john@www.mmmanifesto.com for rates and schedule info.
But if you have any writer friends you might just explain that last paragraph to him/her and see if they would do it for you as an exercise.
