Hey,
I have been reading several articles lately about creating phone apps as a means of promotion/marketing for your band.
John, do you have any experience or thoughts about this? Can this be effective? Can this be easily monetized? Has anyone else tried this? There are many sites offering easy DIY app building such as http://mobileroadie.com , http://mobbase.com and http://songpier.com . Is one site better than another? Any thoughts or suggestions? So many questions....... anyone?
Thanks, Sully
Hey Sully,
I've looked into apps a great deal and will probably be developing at some point before long. With that said... in my opinion, I think apps (at least for musicians) are mostly just tools to enhance the relationship. I don't personally see them as a way to pick up any significant traffic or profit, at least when you way the amount of work involved against the benefit of other methods that are out there.
What you need to think about is who is going to buying the app. If it's an app for you as an artist, it would seem to me that the only people who would be buying it would be existing fans. That's fine if you want to make a little extra cash. But with the price point as low as it is on an app, I'd rather focus on things that were going to bring new traffic into my funnel.
However, one way to make an app work might be to create an app that is NOT specific to you as an artist but instead offers value to a market. You could then put yourself in front of that market via the app.
For example, if you were a singer songwriter you could create an app that promised to teach people to write a song in 20 minutes... or whatever. Then you could have an intro page, or an ad at the bottom of the app, that asked people to download a free single from the songwriter of the month, which would of course be you. That's just an example, but you get the point.
What I'm trying to get across is that to create an app about you as an artist is to be preaching to the choir. That's fine as a relationship enhancing tool or a source of additional income. But from a "promotional" standpoint you'd want to jump in front of an existing app niche, offer that market value, and then use the app as a tool to get you exposure.
Also keep in mind, apps can be created for as little as a few hundred bucks, but they do take quite a bit of work to promote effectively.

Thanks John and Sully for this.
I was wondering whether it might be better investing in an app or in a video for an upcoming single release and this has put that in perspective for me.
Enda
