Hello,
I just barely started using a website by the name of Patreon. It's another crowd funding website similar to Kickstarter, but different. It's designed for people who create consistent content instead of single projects. For example, a musician who uploads a new video to You Tube every week. When someone becomes a Patron on the site they agree to give the artist a certain amount of money every time they release new content. Basically if I pledge $1 to you, I would pay you $1 every time you uploaded a new video or new song. They can also set a monthly maximum to make sure they stay within their budget.
Like Kickstarter, you can offer rewards for different levels of pledges, but keep in mind you will have to fulfil those rewards every time you release something new. I make cover song videos for You Tube pretty regularly, so I believe this should work better for me than Kickstarter. Also, you don't have to have something new all the time. You can release new content whenever you want, there's no set schedule. The nice thing about the website is that goals are optional. You don't have to earn a specific amount before you're allowed to get paid, you can get the money right away (after their fees of course, which I think are 8%). That's very nice for me since I spent a lot of time and money on several Kickstarter campaigns that never reached their goal.
If any of you have had any luck with this website, I would love to hear your stories. I'll definitely keep you posted whether or not it's working for me. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the share Doug. I can see a lot of potential there. Question though... My first thought as a consumer would be, what if they release 40 videos the first day I subscribe and I went and pledged $10 per video. Do they build in maximums for something like that? And what triggers the payment?

John,
As a consumer you can add a monthly limit, so you never pay more than what you want. Like $50 a month. So, if they post 40 videos the first day, and you've pledged $10 per video, you would never pay more than $50 a month. Here is what they say about it in their FAQ: "You can set a maximum monthly amount for your pledges. If your pledges reach this cap you will not be charged for more patron-supported content from that creator for the rest of the month."
They currently use Stripe and Paypal to handle their incoming payments from consumers. As a creator you would upload your content to You Tube, Sound Cloud or wherever and then provide the link in your Patreon account. Their FAQ says the following about it: "If your content is hosted on another platform (such as Youtube, Tumblr, Soundcloud, etc) simply place the link in the URL section. If the post is of a final creation of yours (meaning the final product), be sure to mark as PAID (so that you get paid for it),"
I'm still new at this, so I hope this answers your questions. Thanks!

Cool, thanks. I just reached out to them with an interview request. We'll see what comes of it. I like the concept.

John,
Awesome, I can't wait to hear it! I hope there's some good tips on how to advertise your Patreon page. I'm finding it more difficult to advertise than my Kickstarter campaigns. I'm guessing it's because most people know what Kickstarter is and Patron is new and unknown.

Hi Doug, I didn't ask about marketing as that isn't something these services really seem to know much about. But I did ask for some examples of well done campaigns, which he offered. I should have it for you soon
Thanks for asking about the service.
