Hello. I've been putting off this course as well as the insider circle because I feel like I need to have an entire album done to sell. It seems the only way to make money is to have something that I can sell for at least $10. I'm thinking of selling the EP I have of four songs for $3 since they'd be getting one track for free already.
Am I wrong in thinking I can't really do much right now. I don't have a huge budget but I'd rather put the money into ads and make some money back than making a full album right now and not seeing profits from that in a while. I don't have the money to produce a whole album right now anyway.
I figure I'll at least start building up an email list, but I'd really like to start marketing and making money off on my EP.
Thanks,
Jordan
Hey Jordan,
It will be very challenging to turn a profit with such inexpensive items.
To my mind you have a few options...
1. You can do exactly as you described, but only spend something small (like $5/day) and view it as an investment. You may not make your money back, but you can start dialing things in and growing your audience. Then you can scale up later. This is probably what I would do if I were in your shoes right now.
2. You could create a membership site and sell an annual membership and promise to release a song each year, as well as additional content. This way you could charge $10 - $30 per year, despite not having a full album. However, it is a bit of a commitment because you need to be able to produce enough songs over the next year to provide the content you promised.
Hope that helps.

Hi John,
Thanks for your thoughts. I have all 12 songs already written for my new album just not the funds or a producer/engineer lined up. Btw, how much should it cost on average per song to get a track produced with high sound quality? I had an industry person tell me the quality of one of my songs is subpar sound quality so I'm a little sensitive to that and want to get a high quality sound. And where would I go about finding good producers that can deliver high quality results but charge a fair price?
I think I'll go with option 1. of just getting things started and getting an email list going. As for the membership site, do you mean like a Patreon account? I've never had enough faith in myself to do one. I understand selling music but "additional content" is a huge step for me. Maybe I need to work on my confidence and tell myself if others are successful I can be too. I also would like to start a crowdfunding campaign. But still working on gathering up the guts to do that one as well.
Thanks,
Jordan
Prices can vary wildly. And you will find incompetent people that are more than willing to charge you the same amount as competent people. So it's a tough one to put a price on. In my experience, a lot of it comes down to relationships as well.
I personally pay around $1000 a song. But that is with a producer I have been working with for years and who I have a great relationship with. His normal rate is many times more than that. But I do think you should be able to find an experienced producer willing to work for that. You can find people willing to work for much less, but I really think it pays to find people who are regularly making real records for labels that are getting radio play, etc. Not just independent musicians. That experience tends to be important.
