Am i the only fool having a bear of a time with facebook ads lately? It looks nothing like it used to. You have to choose the page you're promoting first and when you choose one outside of facebook it autofills in the title and description based on the content of that site. All that can be changed. so no biggie there. But, heres the thing thats driving me nuts:
It automatically uploads a pic from the page. And it wont let me change it!
It would be awesome if I could share this frustration with someone else. But, if Im the only one dealing with it so be it.

When I choose a page from outside FB, it forces the URL of my page into the text right above the picture. I don't know if it's possible to get rid of that. When I go to choose the picture though, it does give me the option of uploading one from my computer, or choosing one that has already been uploaded.
I just selected "create an ad" to see what happened, and it gave me a button to upload a picture if I wanted, so I'm not sure why you don't see the same thing.
Hmmm, weird. I've been running a lot of ads over the last month and I haven't noticed those things. I do see the link at the top of the ad while i create it but it doesn't display any differently when the ad goes live, for me anyway.
I have been having been having some real issues with facebook disapproving ads for weird reasons though. In very illogical ways. Long story short I had several ads running, I cloned them but the clones were rejected, even though identical ads were running. No matter what I changed all new ads would get rejected for this particular campaign until I wrote in. Then, after 2 days of waiting I would have someone get back to me and usually approve the ads. But waiting that long makes it impossible to stay on top of keeping the ads fresh. I've written dozens of emails asking for clarity and getting what seems like a form letter form some overseas support person with a fake American name. Very frustrating. I'm hoping that this is just a result of this particular domain getting flagged or something. I need to run some new ads for a new campaign and see if I continue to have issues.

I'll let you know what I find! I'm hoping it works out because it's easy and I'd like to do it again if it does.

Hey Mike, what landing page are you sending people to?
I'd personally still strongly advise some kind of a squeeze page. Even if it's just an advertisement for the show with a "enter your name and email address and we'll add you to the discount (or free) guest list. Then you could follow up and remind them on show day.
You really want to have some kind of scarcity element to motivate people to take action, not to mention contact info so you can market to them later.
But regardless, I'm interested in hearing how it goes. Post the results in the case study forum if you don't mind so everyone can find them easily. I love hearing the specifics on these things.

I was actually just sending them to a Facebook event I was trying to promote and I did it in a week. $13 I got 7 click throughs. Eh, I probably wouldn't do that again. I originally set it to appeal to anyone that had sci-fi, rock, and comedy in their interests but that seemed to have too few people so I just opened it up to "comedy" so that it would get more views. I've included a screenshot of the Facebook Ads Manager as well.
I really like the idea of sending them to a squeeze page with details about the show and a link to get on the guest list or some kind of promo if they sign up to go. I think I'm going to do that for our next out of town gig or our next in town gig that I want to sell out.
If you figure out ways to get people to come to shows, I'm interested in that. I haven't currently tried anything myself, but the need is definitely there. Trying to get people to see a live show is murder these days.
There is no wrong way to do it, but if it were me I would just run my traffic to a normal squeeze page that was designed to get people too buy my album. Then I would run the occasional promotion for concerts and other live events. That way you will hopefully profit, or at least break even on your ads and the shows will be 100% profit. The only difference being that I would run geo targeted ads to specific location based squeeze pages so I could segment out my lists. This would also allow you to add location too your ad copy which should help with conversions. For example, "download the latest single from Orange County's hottest punk rock trio ____"... or whatever.... should do really well if you only offer the squeeze page up to people in Orange County. That added relevance to the reader can really help a lot. If you liked punk rock and lived in Orange County you'd just about need to sign up to make sure you were in the know.
And because people are far more likely to come to a show once there is some awareness of the artist, you are far more likely to get people to the show once they have downloaded some free music and hopefully connected with you as the artist.
But again, that'd just be my approach. There is no real wrong way to do this stuff. Only profit and loss.
