I'm in the process of putting up a limited time offer with the page expiration robot plugin. John - in your tutorial you suggest using the IP for detecting the user's computer, but I realized a problem with it that makes me think cookies might work better. Sometimes more than one person share an IP (like my boyfriend and I who live together and share wireless). So when he checked our offer it was already expired on his computer because I had already expired it on mine. That could also be so for other people who share wireless including at workplaces or people who bring laptops to cafes.
Is there any reason not to use the cookies' option?
Thanks.
Hey Annie,
It's a good question. I've experienced similar issues with IP. The conventional wisdom out there says that IP is a better way to go just because it's really easy to clear your cookies and see the offer again. Though this may be something that is more prevalent in savvy markets like "internet marketing". It may not be an issue so much for musicians. I just experienced a lot of inconsistencies with IP because I was staying in various hotels while my wife was in the hospital. Every time I moved hotels the offer restarted, where as it wouldn't if it was cookie based. I'll personally probably stick with IP, but I don't think there is too much harm going either way. For 99% of the people, it's really just that first click that matters. Few people will have multiple people viewing from teh same IP, or be moving around during an offer. So you should be fine which ever way you go.
