I recently ran across a post on John's site that was using a social media sharing widget thingey... (I don't know what to call it)

with a little digging I found a message that said it was sold out. has it become obsolete or is there an alternative? It looks like a really cool tool.

Thoughts?

Hi Aaron,

Steve here.  Unfortunately john and his partner on the project decided to take the Viral Music Toolkit off the market recently.  Due to the browsers and social sites that the players interacted with, constantly updating their security settings, it became far to complicated to keep up with.  For that reason they decided it made the most sense to just phase it out.

So sorry for any inconvenience.

All good. I am learning that nothing stays the same in this business. except maybe the general principals....

I am having a really tough time wrapping my mind around some of the traffic generation concepts (What if I use a little more grease?)

could you help me work this out:

  • content marketing is not necessarily the same subject as SEO? it can contribute to SEO but can move traffic separately?
  • SEO appears to be an ever changing, murky water that John is valuing less and less as time goes on, paid traffic being his preferred go to.
  • Is it possible to use content marketing without giving a thought to SEO and still be able to generate a couple hundred visits to a website per day after a couple of months?
  • Are these questions pointing me in a productive direction or should I buck up and embrace paid advertising like FaceBook ads? I would really like to start with free advertising because my copy skills suck and I think it might be a good primer for when I think I am ready to put money down on my copy.....

Thoughts?

Thanks So Much!!

Just to clarify, the app still completely works. It was just that many people were buying it to post on Facebook itself, which was never what it was designed for, and because of the changes that Steve mentioned it was getting to be a lot of work for a product that was not our main focus. But many still use it and it still completely functions well.

Re Content marketing: correct

Re SEO: Correct. I hate SEO these days. Love paid. Paid traffic is a real business. SEO and content marketing can disappear overnight.

Re content marketing still being valid: Yep, very much still possible. Many rely on it completely

Re productive direction. Honestly, I don't think so. I would rather drive traffic through shows and old fashioned networking than spend my time on content marketing these days. I want fast and consistent. Content marketing is doable, and I have done a LOT of it in my time. But it's exhausting, and only getting harder.

I am having a hard time accepting paid advertising as a sole alternative. What I like about content marketing and even SEO is that you could (or used to be able to) attract thousands to a website each day... Of course, volatility of Google and other platforms makes this difficult. As you say, it sounds like a downright unreasonable scenario.

I guess my issue could be boiled down to one question. My short experience with paid advertising has given me the impression that I can attract a hundred or two to my landing page each day if I get Good at it. But what if I want to work towards bringing thousands each day? Is that possible with Facebook?

I really appreciate your help. Thanks so much for making yourself available!Laugh

Hey Aaron,

You definitely don't have to accept paid traffic as your only alternative. There are many people out there with businesses that are fueled 100% by free organic traffic. I used to be one of them. I have just been burned by it, and I find it exhausting. I also feel like a person needs to be able to support their business with paid advertising if it's going to be sustainable for the long term. It helps you really look at your offers and make sure they are optimized and meeting the needs of the market. But I completely understand the attraction to free traffic. I suppose more than anything, I just want to personally shy away from being responsible for one's efforts on that front, as it's just getting harder and harder out there. But it can still absolutely be done.

It is a lot easier to get thousands of visitors per day with paid traffic than with free traffic, so I wouldn't worry on that front.

Then it is only a matter of shifting paradigms..... The potential numbers with paid traffic has really been my only concern. It sounds like I was under the wrong impression in thinking that paid traffic was very limited in its potential.

With all that said, I feel much more comfortable shifting gears and moving in a paid advertising Direction. Thank you so much for the help! 🙂

Happy to help. Let me know if you can pin point what I said that gave that impression, as I'd definitely like to correct that, if I gave someone the impression that paid advertising was limited. There is far more traffic out there than any of us can afford to pay for. The only limitation is our ability to hone in on our target audience. Some people get stuck on that and can't find an audience big enough, that also converts for them. But  it's just a matter of testing. There is plenty of traffic out there. Keep us posted on how things go for you.
