Hello,

I'm running a Holiday special selling my hand made USB Flash Drives with all my 8 records on it: http://www.ericjohnkaisermusic.....e-de-noel/ I think it could make a fun Christmas gift.

After seeing John's videos on retargeting I thought it could be exciting to run an Ad on Facebook, targeting people interested in what I do, to try and boost the sales. So I decided to create an ad yesterday.

First, I created an audience by importing my almost 4 000 contacts from Aweber to Facebook. Facebook tells me that 2,400 of these people are on Facebook. I'm running an ad targeting those people right now.

At the same time, I also wanted to add to this audience my friends from my Facebook personal profile: http://www.facebook.com/ericjohnkaiser. I actually have more friends on my personal profile than people that follow my Fan page (https://www.facebook.com/ericj.....isermusic/) so I thought it would be a good idea to do so. However I can't figure out how to do it, or if it's even possible... It says you can import some Facebook user IDs (like you import a csv file with email addresses I guess) but I can't figure out how. I looked in the Facebook help center but didn't find an answer either.

Exploring another option, I also looked if I could boost the post I put about that Holiday Special on my personal profile but it doesn't seem like you can promote a post posted on your personal profile, only one posted on a Fan page.

I was wondering if you can help me create an audience with the people from my personal Facebook profile or maybe find another way around it ? or maybe it's just not possible to do so... ?

Many thanks!

Hey Eric,

Unfortunately you cannot target any friends on your personal profile, nor can you run an ad from your personal profile. At least as far as I know. FB seems to really want to draw a business and personal distinction between the two page types.

Uploading user IDs is really more something you would do if you had an app that recorded those user IDs. There are ways to scrape user IDs and upload them but FB doesn't want you to be doing that and you put your account at risk if you do, so I would not mess with uploading user IDs.

Your best bet is to make sure you have a retargeting pixel on your site and then try and motivate your profile friends to click over to your site, They will then get added to the custom audience and you can track them in the future.

You can also merge a profile with a page, but then you will lose them from your profile, which most likely won't be worth it.

Thanks a lot John. I figured it was something like that. I had already talked to you about merging my Facebook profile with my Fan page but you had already advised me not to do so because the reach is higher on my personal page.

The "problem" is that I have more people that follow me on my personal profile (https://www.facebook.com/ericjohnkaiser) than on my Fan page (https://www.facebook.com/ericj.....isermusic/) so I guess unless those friends also like my Fan Page it's hard to target them ? Because even the retargeting pixel only applies to Fan Pages, right ? In other words I'm loosing the people following me on personal page but who are not fans of my fan page....

Thanks again for your precious help.

Eric

Hey Eric. Sorry for the slow response. I took a little time off for Christmas.

The retargeting pixel actually goes on your website. So you are retargeting anyone who has been to your website within 6 months. And if you share your blog posts and such on your FB profile, those friends that are interested in your career should be clicking over and getting pixeled. But you can also target people who like your FB page as a separate option.

Unfortunately there is no way to just target people who like your profile.

This from FB: "At this time, the connections targeting options are only available for any Page, event or app you’re the admin of. You can also target friends of people who are connected to your Page, but at this time you can't target your personal profile friend connections."

As long as you've got that retargeting pixel on the site I don't think it's that big of a concern. You can also make sure to suggest that your friends like your page. And if you continue to run ads, in time your page likes will far surpass your friends on your personal profile.
