John posted an awesome interview/podcast regarding Spotify here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/po.....d483256618. If you haven't listened to it, you should.
In summary, a lot of artists think they are getting a bum deal from streaming radio. I'm actually not a big fan of Spotify. But that doesn't mean that I'm not a fan of streaming radio. I love Pandora!! And when you take the concept of "windowing" into consideration in your overall strategy, I think Pandora (and to a lesser extent, other streaming radio) rocks!
People complain about how they are getting all these spins and not very much money, but let's talk about how many people it takes to get "all these spins."
I get about 200,000 spins a quarter on Pandora. Wow! Sounds like a lot! Not really... according to Pandora, the average Pandora listener listens about 20 hours a month, which is about 60 hours a quarter. I know that when I listen to the Charley Langer station, my songs come up about twice in an hour. So, one scenario could be: 200,000 spins / (60 hours x 2 spins) = 1,667 people. Those of you who are into list building know that's not a lot of people.
Now, let's look at how much that pays. Last I heard, Pandora pays out about $0.0013 per spin. I own all my songwriting and publishing. I'm also the featured artist and copyright holder for the performance. I get almost all of that (a small percentage is taken by BMI and SoundExchange for administration). So, if I get roughly $225 a quarter from roughly 1,700 people, how does that suck? That appears to be about what it has worked out to for me. And especially if I market my Pandora station to customers after they have either bought or refused my CD -- how does that suck?
For those of you who have missed me, I still lurk! I'm working on a new album. Frankly, I just have felt lame trying to continue to push music that's now five years old. Until I have some new music, I feel like a dork to both my fans and to you guys!! LOL!
For those who are interested, here's a preliminary version of one of my new songs: http://www.charleylanger.net/f.....eeling.mp3.
Another interesting article that I think puts some perspective on the whining: http://theunderstatement.com/p.....16-dollars.
Thanks Charley, great numbers you point out! Good to see you back in the forum

I'm just browsing the forums for help and advice about something totally unconnected with this subject, but it caught my eye - probably because I have a daughter called Pandora!
I wondered whether you know that Pandora (the radio, not my daughter...) is blocked in the UK? We loved it when it first became available, but some months later we were notified that we could no longer access it from a UK IP address.
So of you have a strategy to get your music to the UK, Pandora doesn't reach us here.
Hope this is helpful
Deb
Thanks Deb! I appreciate you taking a moment to comment on this thread. Yeah… I know that Pandora isn't in every country. However, I still get much better royalty income from Pandora and any other streaming service.
Best wishes with your music!
