Hello Fellow Members,
This video on You Tube was recommended by CD Baby and I thought it was interesting idea. This guy uses facebook ads to get songs viewed by record labels. If you can get past his annoying personality, there's some useful information to be had. I would suggest combining what he says along with what John has already taught us about facebook ads.
Good idea or bad idea? How can we use this information to help us find our target audience? Watch the video and let me know what you think!

It's an interesting idea, although I'm not sure if this would be of benefit when looking for a record deal.
I would have to give it a try, but I don't know if I want a record deal
Elmo,
I wouldn't want a record deal either. What I found interesting about this video is the method he used to target his advertising to employees of specific companies. It was a form of targeting that I hadn't thought of before. If your ideal fans work for a specific company, it could be really beneficial.

Hey Doug,
This is something that was actually covered a few months back in one of the monthly lessons. Fellow member, Charley Langer, has been using the technique to get his music in front of the bookers of Vinyard events. He plays Jazz and gets a lot of gigs at vinyards. From what I remember he's been having some success with it. You can really do some ninja marketing by creating small, laser targeted ads, to make sure your music is getting in front of the taste makers in your space. Often for just pennies a day.
On a related note, I've been working with an artist and running ads JUST to her own audience on Facebook. I spend only a few dollars a day, but the conversions have been fantastic. She just hit #5 on Billboard's blues chart. Advertising budget at the time, $169

John,
So, what are the specifics on the facebook ad? Timeline ad or sidebar ad? Big uploaded picture or default image? A picture of someone's face or something else? A link below the text or just text? What kind of wording is used? I'm very curious now how you got it to work. Thanks!

Hi Doug,
There are no real rules here. You could use either side bar or timeline. I tend to mostly use newsletter, others use side bar. I would use an ad that corresponded to the content you were linking to in some way, but faces tend to do well. The wording depends on what you are promoting. What Charley did was create a video and text that spoke to the interests of a potential booker, not the consumer. And he offered more than just a track, though his focus was not on getting people to subscribe. It was more of an exposure to taste-makers approach.
You might try searching for Charley Langer in the search field and PMing him about what he did. I'm sure he's be happy to share the link.

John,
I'll keep experimenting, and let you know if anything works. Lately I've been doing boosted facebook posts for my Indiegogo project. I've tried various images, text and targeting. So far, I've only been able to generate a few clicks per post, after spending $5 per boost. I'm guessing this is mainly because I'm advertising a fan funding campaign instead of giving away a free track for e-mail sign-up. The best rate I've gotten is $1 per click, which I guess is fine for a fan funding site which has the potential of a bigger ROI. It's ending next week, so I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Hey Doug, $1 per click is way to high. One thing I've been doing with boosted posts is an advanced set up where I only target people who like my page and I bid on impressions rather then per click. I find that gets my posts a lot of cheap exposure to my followers that I otherwise can't reach. If you really want those clicks though, I would bid per click.
With the typical boost option you are getting a lot of exposure to friends of friends, and they can be really untargeted.
I think advertising a fan funding campaign for something like music will be tough if you go outside of your existing fan base. It's one of those things that needs a little pre-existing familiarity and bond, in my opinion.

John,
Yes, the majority of contributions have come from family and friends, but a small percentage have come from strangers. So, I guess it's not a total loss. I'll have to try bidding, and see if it helps me. I'll be doing a few more posts before the campaign ends on Friday. Thanks a bunch!

Happy to help. Fingers crossed for you. How far out from your goal are you? Keep the social media pressure on and make sure those emails are going out. You might try a live street jelly event where you invite your social feeds and your email list and treat it sort of like a telethon, where you use the platform to really make your case for support. Just a thought.

John,
Yes, I was already thinking about using Street Jelly. I'm currently at 66% with 48 hours to go. I have one more e-mail planned for the last day, and several more social media posts. My last post was $0.70 per click, so it's getting better.
