Getting a better email open rate - what's wrong with these subject lines?

Hey John:

Just took a look at the open rates for all of my autoresponder emails (which I recently zeroed out so they would only show  data relevant to my most recent FB ad experiments) , and they don't look very good.

Here's a list of the email subject lines and associated open rates:

1) Hi - It's Radio Nowhere  37.5%

2) John Lennon, Van Morrison, Carlos Santana - and Radio Nowhere? What?   27.3%

3) How To Interview Stoned Rock Stars For Fun And Profit   21.2%

4) Shhhh - I'm Hiding from Michael Jackson's Army of Zombie Lawyers   32.7%

5) My Mom Is Going To Be So Mad That I Told You About This... (1st LTO email)   27.5%

6) Time Sensitive - Get The Limited Edition Radio Nowhere CD + Bonus Tracks   23.4%

7) Final Notice - Get The Limited Edition Radio Nowhere CD + Bonus Tracks    27%

I thought these were pretty grabby lines, but the numbers don't lie: is there anything in particular that you might advise in terms of either punching these up, or replacing them entirely?

Also, I turned off the double opt-in requirement for this list, since I remembered you saying somewhere that you often do that for cold traffic when you're optimizing a squeeze page - which is my main priority right now. Do you think that might be the main reason for the low open rates?

Thanks!

P.S. These are all HTML emails, not text emails, so every open should actually be getting tracked.

Yeah, what's weird is the first email. that should be up around 80%. At least 60% or higher. I have never seen such a low first email rate. What's more confusing is how consistant they are after that. They move around a bit but they are all in the same range. you normally see a slow and consistant decline until things bottom out in the 20% - 40% range.

What may be happening is that some people are adding fake addresses to see if they can get the download for free, and then aweber stops delivering to those emails after they bounce, hence the consistant open rate after the first one. But you might want to check with Aweber on this. They will probably just blame it on the single opt in which may or may not be true. All you may be able to do is zero things out and then turn it back on to see if the stats change. Pretty weird though.

Thanks, John.  I checked with AWeber just to make sure that there was nothing wrong with the way I'd set up the list, or the autoresponder, and there wasn't. I also turned the opt-in back on, just hoping that I'll end up with a greater % of people who really do want what I'm offering.

So just a last quick question - you don't see anything fundamentally uninteresting about the subject lines themselves?

Not fundementally, no. That doesn't mean they can't be improved. But i don't read them and think they are bad. It's that first open rate that suggests something weird. Also odd that the third email is doing worse than the last one. You don't usually see that. It's possible that your demographic doesn't like the stoned reference and it's also possible that they are actually thinking it's spam because of the "fun and profit" line and just not reading beyond that. See what Aweber says and remember that you can call them. You'll typically do better if you get on the phone.

Thanks, John. I did actually call AWeber, but they really didn't have anything for me beyond letting me know there were no technical issues.

Well, no, that's not quite true. They recommended that I add some images to my emails, so that people who have images turned off by default (and would thereby not trigger an AW open when they look at my email) will see that there are supposed to be images in the email and might elect to turn them on.

That sounds like kind of a stretch to me - if someone is used to having images off by default for all their emails, are they going to bother to turn them on to look at mine?  - and I doubt that's the root of my issue.

I'd agree. I don't think that is the issue at all. All I can say is that your email rate on email #1 is way off. I would try turning ON the double opt in, resetting the stats, and trying again to see if the bogus emails and a small sample was the issue. Could have even just been a fluke if you didn't have a statistically significant number of subs.
