Hi,

Longs post so thanks in advance:

First question:If there is a thread for this(didn't see one) or a video let me know. I have a question regarding how to proceed after the initial email campaign.

In March we released a CD  by building our new site via the mmm3 model and then quickly went on tour.

We went through our older email list and were able to have a lot of folks join the new aweber list plus people we met at

live shows.

Now we will be going back on tour for the next month and want to update people about the tour, the current album and the planning of another cd.  Also to stay in touch in general.

1. Do create we another email series or would it just be a traditional email update and that's it?

2. We are looking to give away some free songs outside of the initial email campaign as a thank you but have not

created a monthly subscribtion. Do we mention that in this follow up email/series or what that be for another series to include people in a monthly give away/updates about tour and full cds.

3. I don't want to overload people but I also don't want to dissapear.

Second Question:

We haver our main .com and now .net which is based off the mmm3 model. We added a link on the .com so folks can head to the new site and get downloads and possibly buy the CD.

1. We use the .com because it is straight forward and has done well for us in terms of booking gigs. So I am hesitant to get rid of it all together. However I think it is confusing to have the two sites and we are always confused as to which one to promote on our social media sites. Also the new mmm3 is stark white and the older site is more flashy in color and layout.

Third Question:

We really like what mmm3 is doing for us so far but have been asked by a couple of industry folks why we're are not on itunes, spotify etc.  We took the music off the sites because we were not really seeing a great return but some people are suggesting that we keep music on there for search purposes.  Would it be good to keep things on itunes etc if we kept it at the same price as the mmm3 site?  Thoughts?

Thank you!

Stacy

Hey Stacy,

All good questions...

As for the follow up series, there are a few different approaches you could take. Some people want everything automated and they just create one long autoresponder series that goes on for years. I personally only create a short autoresponder that lasts for about two weeks and is designed to make that first sale. From there I go to real time broadcasts to the entire list, mainly to keep them engaged so that I have their attention when I want to promote something new. A good schedule would be at least twice a month. Once a week would be even better. I would try to avoid letting your communication get any less than once a month. You can create a list segment to exclude all people that have not yet completed your autoresponder and then tick that every time you send out a message. That way people that are still in your funnel won't get hit with those real time messages.

As for what site to send people to, it's pretty simple. Send cold traffic to the squeeze page, and existing fans and industry to your "official" site. You can completely customize the theme so that it matches, if that concerns you. Be sure to monitor results though because fancy, colored squeeze pages tend to perform worse. I personally think it doesn't matter what your squeeze page looks like, so long as it converts well.

I think all those third party sites are a bit over rated. But I know what you mean about people expecting to see them out there. My personal feeling is that you might be best served to launch new albums through your own funnel so that you can make the upsell. Then, a few months down the line you can get that older content out there on all those third party sites so you can take advantage of the search engine exposure that those engines offer. If you don't have an upsell then it really doesn't matter as much.

Hope that helps.

I like the idea of using your own funnel first and then moving to iTunes and Spotify. That's something that makes your e-mail list feel special and your community more like an exclusive place. I'm gonna try that on my next EP!

Cool. That's my plan for the next release as well. There is too much money to be left behind on upsells if you sell through those channels that most consumers would prefer, not to mention the fees they all take. I think selling yourself can be positioned as something really cool. And then you can use the iTunes release as an excuse to re-promote the album to the non buyers a few months down the line.

Mike, John! Thank you for such detailed and insightful responses!  I really appreciate it.

We're getting ready to be more interactive with the email list. John are those the emails I get with your blog posts?

I really like your thoughts on itunes. We like being on there but it is also so much fun to interact with folks directly via email and see how they are enjoying the record.  And some people don't buy the record right away but it's still great to talk back and forth and that happens because of the multiple emails sent out.

thanks again! We'll keep you posted.

Happy to help. What emails are you referring to? I'm not totally following.

In your first response you said that you try to seperate your emails when new folks sign up so at first they are not getting your weekly live posts on top of the email series.

I get emails from you occasionaly with new blog posts.  Is that the email list you are speaking of?

thanks,

Stacy

Hey Stacy, I'm still not 100% sure I follow, but to clarify, here is what I do..

For a basic list I usually create 5 - 7 emails that are designed to build a relationship with a new subscriber and ultimately to close the sale. These will be a mix of emails. Some will include links to blog posts, free music, videos, etc, and eventually they will include links to more direct promotions.

This initial series usually concludes in about 2 weeks. I also send out real time broadcasts to my list just to keep them engaged for the long run (usually with blog posts and other media) and promote future products, events, etc. But I only send those real time broadcasts to people who have completed the initial series. You can do this by creating a segment that consist only of the people who have reached the final email in your series, and then sending your emails to only those people. Does that answer the question?
