This might be a stupid question but I am new to all of this, selling and music through distributors and marketing my own music like I'm learning with MMM 3.0.  My question is if and when I begin using a distributor like CDBaby who will control both the publishing and distribution of my music, can I legally still market my music myself on my splash page.  I ask because after reading all of their legal mumboJumbo I can't understand, I was not sure since they claim that they will have control of my music for a year.  Could someone advise I just want to make sure I won't get into any trouble if I use their service but continue to market my music myself from my own site.  Thanks in advance to your patience and assistance.  AllenEmbarassed

Hey Allen,

Not a stupid question at all. For liability reasons I'm hesitant to offer any "legal advice". Everything I know is that you are not relinquishing any real control. They just have the ability to distribute your music. You can still distribute it yourself and you still own everything. I don't know if they prohibit you from going with another distributor. That said, there would not be much of a reason to if you went with them. But to be sure you are getting the right info you might just give them a call or shoot them an email. They are really helpful and quick to respond.

Thanks John,

I don't hold you liable for any advise or suggestions you may offer.  I will take your advise to contact them with the question.  What brought this up was that I was leaning towards their service and then I got an email for the Black Friday which offered their service to market my album for half the price but that if my album wasn't ready I could still get the offer but not upload my music but do it at a later time and still get the half off.  So I signed up but have left the uploads in limbo for the meantime.  I want to continue to work towards your suggestion of marketing my music before I put it up for purchase elsewhere, but once I do upload it I just wanted to know if I could continue that campaign after I begin the CDBaby thing.  Thanks, AllenCool

Hey Allen,

In my experience CD Baby is very helpful and flexible, but I was n't totally clear what you meant by " I want to continue to work towards your suggestion of marketing my music before I put it up for purchase elsewhere, but once I do upload it I just wanted to know if I could continue that campaign after I begin the CDBaby thing.". If you are asking if you can sign up with CD Baby but release the album digitally at a later date, then yes, you can (as far as I know). But they should be able to clear up anything you are not certain of in the process. Let us know how you make out.

Hey John,

I just wanted to give you an update as to my chat with CD Baby.  So, it's just like you said, the music belongs to me and so I can sell my music independently any way I want.  They also informed me that I can sell through multiple distributors as well but that I should be cautious that they are not distributing to the same sellers/retailers as CD Baby as that would be a duplication of service and would cause issues.  So obviously that is why you should stick to one distributor at a time. So there you go in case someone else has the same question.

Cheers, AllenCool
