Hello everyone,
I was agonizing over how to come up with an LTO without paying the fee for my own Shopping Cart... when I remembered that CD Baby emails me when someone buys something. It hasn't happened very often, so I'm not exactly sure how reliable they are, but what I was thinking was to offer a 72 hour deal where if someone buys a CD or download from the CD Baby page, I can then send them some free songs as a bonus.
Example: Buy this EP on CD Baby in the next 72 hours, and I will send you a free download of another EP plus a bonus track!
Is there any reason why this isn't a good idea? Has anyone ever NOT been notified of a CD Baby sale? Is their resulting email after a sale an automated email? Or is it possible they might take a while?
I was all set to go on this but thought I'd better ask around first...
And if someone has already discussed this here, maybe you can point me in the direction of where that is.
Thanks!
John
Hey John,
You can absolutely do that... The only thing is that CD Baby doesn't require buyers to pass on their email address. It's an option. So you would need to include some pretty clear instructions on the offer page telling people to be sure and tick that box. And don't underestimate people's ability to miss things
Another approach is to just tell people to email you their email address or order ID and you'll send them the freebie. That way you can let them order through iTunes and Amazon as well. You can't actually cross reference via email with all of those platforms but no one knows that. I have never found anyone to take advantage of the offer when dealing directly with the artist like that.
Of course Paypal is another option.
Any of the above is fine.

My plan is that I would have their email already, this would be my offer to those who sign up to get my free track. If you think having them send me their order ID is good enough, I can do that. I think for now I'd like to keep the orders via CD Baby, or iTunes, etc. until I get this all figured out.
Must appreciated.

Sorry if I wasn't very clear with my response. I understood that you would already have their email. I thought you were asking if you should simply tell them that you would email them the freebie after CD Baby passed it on. I was trying to say that CD Baby will only pass on the email if they tick a box that says they would like to be added to your mailing list. So you would not automatically get everyone. Instead I would tell people that they need to email you the order number or email address after ordering so you can cross reference it with purchases. They don't know that you can't actually do that in some instances so it would be unlikely that anyone would rip you off. What ever you do you just need to make sure it's spelled out clearly on the offer page. Does that make sense?

Hello John,
That was extremely clear, it was just the email address thing I didn't put together. Got it. Sorry you had to repeat yourself. It made sense. I think that's exactly what I will do. Thank you again!

No worries at all. Sounds good.

A follow up question to this topic. In my funnel I have it set up so if they order from cd baby, or itunes and send me the receipt they get handwritten lyrics sent to them (they can pick 3 songs) AND our acoustic EP for FREE.
My question is, when we don't have our own shop on our site and use services like CDbaby, itunes etc... how do we implement the scarsity thing? Should I just write 72 hours with 2 reminders anyway.. and then that offer is gone for everybody who missed it? I know you had a lesson on this, and that there is a script if we use our own sales page/shop but I dont have one right now. WHat to do here?
Hey Marcus,
All you need to do is create a landing page with the offer and put the timer on that. On the landing page you can link to iTunes, CD Baby, etc...
That make sense?

Gents,
I recently setup CD Baby but would prefer selling digital downloads on my own site.
I am fine with the sales button, shopping card and email opt-in but need some advise on the file hosting part.
If I zip my album up it is 73mb. Should I use the same webhost or get a filehosting service?
I started down the path of editing my php max_filesize etc but wanted to ensure my customers have a
reliable file transfer. What are your thoughts and suggestions?
Thanks,
`R
I would host it on your server (your web host) for now, but if you start to have bandwidth issues or are moving a lot of downloads i would get an Amazon S3 account. It's a pain to set up but cheap and easy once it is up and running. I have thousands of very long videos out there watched by tens of thousands of people and I only spend $20 - $30 a month for Amazon hosting. If you are just using it for audio downloads it would likely be pennies. It's a pay for what you use kind of thing.
