can a funnel be too thematic in the wrong way?

Hi John,

Thanks again for feedback in the CR course ...

Following up from that, I wanted to get your perspective on an interesting conundrum I have. I mentioned that my funnel has a nautical theme. My album is NOT nautical though my music video is, and a couple of my songs are. My 'blog post of a life time' is about leaving actual physical messages in bottles in the offices of record labels. Because there was so much nautical stuff there, it's  become a bit of a theme for my funnel. But I decided to keep my website design/ squeeze page NOT nautical as I wanted some things to be off that theme as I didn't want people to think I'm singing sea shanties or something! : http://www.karengracemusic.net.....ee-music

In my fb ads, I used 6 images with dynamic creative. Kind of surprisingly, the two images that way outperformed the other 4 are 2 images from my music video that are by/in the sea (see attached ... and see how people seem to prefer the back of me to the 4 close ups of my face, lol!). As you've advised that we eventually use the same image for the squeeze page as our ads, I have been playing with using the image of the beach with me in the distance as a background so there is continuity, and then another image of my face (eg attached) for the squeeze photo.

However I'm concerned as above that everything is now too nautical and perhaps misleading given that I'm not selling an album of sea shanties or a concept album about the sea etc. I'm also aware that the two beach photos might be working at the moment as it's SCORCHING weather here in the UK ?!!!

So, my question is: From what I've told you, do you think that it sounds like there's a danger of over-egging the nautical theme in a misleading way?

I'm also sending over a question about my USP which maybe is helfpful for you to be able to answer this?

Big thanks,

Karen

I totally understand the concern. I think it's something to keep an eye on but I also think it's probably ok. The numbers will tell us. To me, the nautical theme just feels emotional and creative.

Despite the fact that I usually stick with the same image on a squeeze page and ad, if you are using something mysterious like your back in the ad, I would use a related image with your face on it on the squeeze page. I think that ad image is working because it's dramatic. Why is she walking into the see? Is she ok? But then we need to progress the relationship on the Squeeze. That said, if it's converting, that might be totally ok.

Thanks for this John- helpful to get your perspective. Good to know that a totally nautical theme is not necesarily a massive mistake, and to remember again - testing, testing, testing! Thanks 🙂

An additional thought that is probably going to be taken wrong...

I have seen a lot of pictures of you now as I've clicked around on various links/song/pages etc. It's my personal feeling that the picture of you above is not my favorite. I feel like you, perhaps, look a bit more severe in that image? He said nervously.

I only say this because you mentioned it did not do well. I think it's worth doing a round of ads with JUST images of your face, just to see which one people like most. Simply because it's such an important thing.

I personally like the image of you on soundcloud with the dots under your eyes, although I wish you were looking at me rather than away. But it's lighter, quirky, and attractive.

Just my two cents. I hope no offense is taken.

Hey John. Thanks for your nervous two cents worth on the image ;). I have actually done a round of ads without the 'back to you' images (my mistake one where I started 'worldwide' and then switched.) with my 'severe' one above, as well as the eye-dots one and another really warm, approachable one. The results varied a lot depending on the audience, but in some cases the severe one is the favourite.

I'm being guided by the results, as well as being aware that the data would only really be 100% trustworthy if I had put loads more cash in. Once looking at the results, I'm tuning into my instincts too... Wish me luck, and thanks for your thoughts :).

This is the warm approachable image I thought would do the best in the ads, but it wasn't always the case, though it was popular with some audiences. I love that we can test these things...

Yeah, you never know. That said, I wouldn't trust anything when it comes to a "worldwide" audience. Run a test round of ads using just images of your face, to an audience that has done well and let me know which does best.

I can see the above one you just posted doing well for the reasons you mentioned.
