Does anyone have any experience with MailChimp?  We're using Aweber right now and we're running into an issue importing email addresses obtained via Bandcamp from EP downloads. The Bandcamp page states that you will be added to our mailing list when you download our EP and that you can unsubscribe at any time. In other words, when you click the download link, you are opting-in to our mailing list at the same time. The problem is that Aweber does not let us import email addresses without going through their opt-in as well. Thus, if you download our EP from Bandcamp you have to opt-in twice before you are actually added to our list.  I'm not sure if switching to MailChimp would help me get around this issue but I figured I'd see if anyone had any opinions before switching over.  Or if anyone has a suggestion for another auto-responder to check out, that would be appreciated as well.

Hey Ryan,

Mail Chimp is a fine service (though I personally like weber better). But they require the same double opt in if you are going to import without requiring people to opt in. At least per my last conversation with them.

Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Hey Ryan, I was in a rush earlier. Thought I'd add a few more details. Basically, to insure good deliverability, the better autoresponders create what is called an "audit trail". It's just digital proof that someone opted in to your list. This is so that if ever you get too many spam complaints and deliverability suffers, aweber (or whoever) can show the email provider that blocked your emails, that the opt ins are in fact legit. So to prevent people from simply uploading a whole bunch of scraped emails and polluting the pond, most quality autoresponders require an audit trail if you want to import with the double opt in turned off. My guess is that band camp does not have a way to provide this. It sometimes requires letting aweber login to your account and see what you are doing. You would do bets to call them, if there is any hope.

Conventional wisdom says that if people don't want to confirm, they weren't really engaged with you anyway, but it's still a tough blow and it's a tough call.

Also, just to clear up any confusion... People aren't opting in twice. It's called a double opt in, but they only click one confirmation link. There are times where it makes sense to turn off the double opt in, such as with certain paid advertising campaigns to assure maximum exposure to your offer, but for the most part, I personally think the double opt in is a good idea for anyone hoping to maintain good deliverability over the long haul.

I don't think Mail Chimp will let you do it either, but I believe Constant Contact will. I have an account with them as well and they are fine as far as deliverability but I hate their control panel and I don't know that their features are as robust for marketing as Aweber and mail Chimps. I see them as a good service for corporate newsletters. Much less so for direct response marketers like us.

Thanks for the info John.  I suppose it makes sense if you think about the Bandcamp download as the equivalent of the Aweber web-form.  Do you think it would be worth while to try it without a double opt-in and see what happens?

Not totally clear what you mean? Are you saying that you are going to create an aweber account and want to possibly turn off the double opt in? You still need to have it on if you are importing and cannot provide aweber with the audit trail.

If it's teh former then I would personally not turn it off with my main list. Any list I have that has the opt in off seems to perform poorer in the long run. I sometimes do it on paid campaigns where I am going for a quick sale, but that's it. But as long as you understand the risk, you are certainly free to try it. You wouldn't be alone. Many businesses turn it off. I just want the best delivery rate possible as so much of what I am doing is based on email.

When I connected my aweber customer list to paypal it automatically sent my bandcamp customers the confirmation email for my customer list.  So you might want to do that.

Its great if you're using bandcamp for selling cds.  But, if you're using it to give away music in exchange for emails its not gonna work.  I don't really do either anymore. But when folks buy my cds via bandcamp its pretty cool that they end up on my customer list.

Thanks guys.  If I think about the Bandcamp download page as the equivalent of the Aweber webform then everything becomes clearer.  The only difference being that you can turn off the double opt-in when using Aweber's webform because it will still collect info about the person entering their information whereas Bandcamp will not?  Thus, the double opt-in must be turned on when importing because you cannot provide the audit trail.

Another thing I've been wondering about... does anyone else feel that Aweber's confirmation email may put off potential subscribers?  I think its very crude and comes off as spam.  I haven't been able to do any customizations besides the subject line, a header message, and a signature.  It would be nice if you could make it look a bit friendlier.  Is there a particular reason why Aweber keeps things so basic?

Thanks!

Hey Ryan, yes the default emails are terrible and absolutely feel like spam if not edited. But you can customize the headline and body of the text. You just can't customize the link block. But it's the copy above it and the headline that really matter. You don't want any mention of a "subscription" in there. That can really scare people off as they can sometimes think it's a paid thing.

hey ryan-

yes i think aweber's confirmation is crude and many of my subscribers that i moved over from my old list thought it was spam.  i don't think i have as much trouble with new subscribers b/c they don't know what my emails look like yet.  i've talked to aweber about customizing their confirmation further and they are not flexible.  in general, i find aweber inflexible. i don't think they are tuned in to how a musician works in the way that bandcamp and reverbnation are.  i don't love my experience with them, but i do love that my emails get delivered and the analytics are really helpful.

wishing you the best!
