While trying to tweak the message on my Aweber opt-in form, I came across my auto-responder stats
which are now much easier to read thanks to the new Aweber layout. They go something like this:

1. Intro message title is "Hey, (name)!" body is "being real" as Chris Rempel suggested. Open rate = 85% as would
be expected, it's the email that has the link to the giveaway.

2. Title "(Name), I don't know how..." body is a short video about my history in my old band "please like and share etc."
open rate is only 40%

3. Title "(Name), they want how much...?" body is basically a rant about the major labels reducing the value of a CD
to nothing, how I don't make my CD's like that, and here's another free track to prove it. Open rate 46%.

Here's where things get weird:

4. Title "(Name), this is kind of a secret..." body just tells how I did a cover of song and would they go listen to it
and give me some feed back. No giveaways, but the open rate is 60%!

5. Final message where I ask for the sale, title "(Name), I think you're gonna like this..." body details OTO to get
a significant discount on the CD, however the open rate is only 19%!

This series has been in place since about November 2011, so long enough for these stats to be "normalized" I guess?

What this is telling me is that not enough people are making it to the sales message, but I wonder, should I:

1. Make message #4 the sales pitch keeping the title that is obviously working.
2. Just switch the titles hoping to increase the open rate of the 5th/sales message
3. Make message #4 the sales pitch keeping the title and just ditch the last message or ditch
the video one instead since it has the lowest open rate?

Any experience/input on this?

P.S. I somehow accidentally posted this is the wrong section. I didn't mean for it to end up in the rules thread.

Thanks Tim, that is interesting, and a bit weird.

Either approach is valid, but what I would probably do is try changing the subject first and see what happens. If you don't see a big improvement then I would try removing the 4th email and replacing it with your LTO (but maybe keep the exact same subject line. I could see that working well for an OTO.

Another thing you might do is change the OTO into an LTO and email 2 or 3 times on that. It's a really good idea to reinforce that sales offer with multiple requests to buy. And with a 72 hour LTO you can justify the multiple mailings without dragging it on too long.

I'm sorry. I typed "OTO" when I meant "LTO." My sales pitch is a 72-hour LTO to buy the current CD.
Yeah, I think I should follow up on the LTO. I currently don't, so I will work on that.

Thanks for the guidance, John Smile

Cool, I definitely would follow up. If I run a 3 day LTO I almost always send out one email each day. Occasionally I just do first and last. But by sending additional emails you will usually double your sales. At the very least following up on the final day with a last chance email is imperative. It's a major step that is missing from your process right now. Try it and let us know how things change for you.
