A&R Select - Stay Away

Anyone here ever been contacted by A&R Select? I worked for them for a few days in '08. I've avoided saying anything publicly but I feel comfortable saying what I have to say here. I don't like to sling mud but these guys made quite the impression - and last I knew they were pretty aggressive about lead generation, so I'd guess a few people here have been or will be contacted by them.

The owner encourages employees to literally make things up in order to take their money. I've seen people say they got artists record deals that they didn't and I've seen them tell artists who submitted music for licensing that music supervisors wanted to use their music when they didn't - just to get them to switch to a paid account. It was so bad that I quit and refused the paycheck.

They'd have interns plow through myspace pages and contact anyone they could find and blow sunshine up their asses, trying to make them believe they had real opportunities that, in reality, either didn't exist or that they knew the artist wasn't qualified for.

Truth be told, when I was there the services they were offering were often worth the money. After my experience though I could never recommend anyone do business with them. The culture there is disgusting. They absolutely do not care.

I haven't had any personal experience but I did just search my inbox history and see a few artists who reached out with concerns after spending money. One mentioned a number of BBB complaints. I also saw a bunch of solicitation emails in my own inbox. Kind of fits the bill on what you described. "Your music has been qualified to potentially be licensed", just pay us, etc.

Thanks for sharing the heads up.

Yeah they go through Reverbnation and send messages like this to people:

"This is Andy with A&R Select. Right now we're looking for an artist in your genre, and I came across your band page. I really enjoyed the song "Back To Me", and I'd like to recommend you to one of our New Talent Reps. If you're interested, shoot me a contact number, and I'll pass your music along.
We hope to hear back from you soon!"

Scumbags like this prey on people's dreams and profit from it. I'm sure everyone in this forum knows better, but just in case.

If someone tells you they will make you a star, but you have to pre-pay... You're gonna have a bad time
