Is anyone out there with some experience in the licensing game? I was recently approached via email by a licensing company in Hollywood called 'Wicked licensing'. Anyone know them or of them? They claim they love my latest album and would like to work with me, believing it has potential for film/tv. Sounds good so far, I'm a little wary though as when I visited their website is seems entirely geared towards attracting musicians, unlike most others that I've looked at which are geared towards music buyers. I spoke with someone on the phone there who told me they'll offer a 70/30 non-exclusive deal (in my favor) but the clincher is they ask a $30/month administration fee from me. They claim it goes towards the cost of legal fees incurred as they wrap up deals for their artists and for the cost of hosting all the tracks (!) I balked at this, surely those costs would be shared when and if a deal is actually made? But maybe it's just because I've been in the music biz forever and I'm jaded. I've never gotten into licensing but have always meant to, maybe this sort of thing is not so unusual? Any insight/feedback appreciated. Thanks, Thomas
Hey Thomas,
Licensing isn't really my area of expertise, but that sounds like BS to me. Sounds like they are preying on artists for that upfront fee more than to help. But I could be wrong. I'm going to reach out to a friend in the licensing biz and get a better answer for you. I'll post once I know more.

Ok, so the advice I got from my friend in licensing was the same.
She said the fee they were asking for was a "total deal-breaker to me. Plus, I did a rudimentary search for the company and didn’t come up with anything, and I’ve never heard of them before. All bad signs. I’d definitely steer clear — sounds like a rip-off."
Hope that helps. Sorry it's not more positive news.

Hi John,
Sorry about the late reply but really appreciate you addressing this. Yes I steered clear in the end, bottom-feeders I reckon.
Thanks, and happy Holidays to you!
Sorry for the slow response. I took a little time off for Christmas.
No problem at all. Hope you had a great holiday as well.
