Hey, everybody.
I'm looking into Gumroad as a possible eCommerce solution, since, for various reasons, I don't find PayPal the best solution, and I want something that's "free" (they charge 5%+25c off each purchase). They offer subscription solutions, which I thought I might use for a sort of membership site, and they integrate with ConvertKit, which is the email service I want to use (they have some amazing features that I just love), so I can very easily manage everything to do with subscribers from there. They do make it possible to create offers, and I see that there should be a way to make them time sensitive, but I haven't figured out how yet. I guess worst case I just link to the offer through a time sensitive page. I don't plan on using the storefront there, anyway - just use their purchase links.
Also, I can sell any physical products through them as well, so I can do it all through a single platform, which is nice, and I don't need to do the technical stuff.
So anyway, I was just wondering if anybody had experience with Gumroad. I've been tinkering with it today and so far it looks like it should integrate very well with MMM.
Anyway, looks like I'm finally getting close to getting my funnel finished. I'll be writing a lot tonight and tomorrow - blog posts, mainly, and I also need to polish up my copy. Hopefully I can get everything lined up by this weekend.
One potential problem I see now is that I don't immediately see a way to send people to a custom Thank You page, so an upsell might be problematic. One way around that, I suppose, would be to send out a time sensitive offer on the upsell as an automated email through Convertkit, after the purchase. Thoughts?
Hey Eyvindur, sorry for the slow response. I was mostly offline for the holiday.
I looked into Gumroad a year or two ago and I they were not able to do what I needed in order to execute the strategy I teach. I'm not sure what features may or may not have changed, and to be honest, I can't remember all of the reasons I didn't like them.
But you touch on two things that I think are essential. You really MUST be able to redirect back to your own site, or you are leaving a lot of money on the table. The thank you page is also a place to have people sign up to the customer list if you are not using integration.
I also can't imagine doing this without time sensitive offers. The only way to do that is by adding the script to a sales page of your own and then including the order button there. From what I remember they offer a page that is similar to a sales page, as apposed to a shopping cart. If I am remembering right and that's how they do it, then I think that is redundant.
I am not a fan of Paypal either, but if you don't want to go with them then I would use a shopping cart type set up with another payment processor. Hopefully the processor or shopping cart integrates with your email management service. If it doesn;t you can place an opt n code for the customer list on the thank you page (after the upsell).
You might look into Stripe: https://stripe.com/us/pricing
And then do a search for a wordpress shoppingcart plugin that works with stripe and allows you to redirect back to a custom URL, which most should.
Can I ask why you are choosing not to go with Aweber? I personally think using any other service is a potential mistake.

Hey, no problem. Thanks for the reply.
First of all, it's very easy to use Gumroad on a Wordpress site, and never really need to send customers away until they click buy (basically I can create a button, similar to PayPal, which takes them to a payment form). I also discovered that I can create an offer link, so I can just use that for a TSO. So that part is covered.
Again, the only drawback I can see is the upsell part. Now, I don't know if it's impossible - I've written them an email to find out for sure. The one possible solution I can see, if they don't offer it at all, is to send out a new autoresponder series (I can trigger a new series when an order is placed) with a new times sensitive offer (much, much shorter this time) for the upsell, which will be a membership site. I've prodded around a bit more and found that the membership features in Gumroad are just excellent. So that's another reason to stick with them, if I can.
It's not really that I DON'T want to use Aweber, but rather that when I compared the different services, ConvertKit's features blew everything else out of the water. I really think they'll serve me better in the long term.
Another great feature that comes from using these two services together, by the way, is that I can set it up so that if somebody buys from my Gumroad account they're required to sign up for my list. And since there are some discovery features (when somebody buys something they'll see related products - can be turned off, though), somebody might find me there, and of course somebody might get a link to the Gumroad page, as opposed to my squeeze page, or go through my content site (where I'll have a storefront) and buy from there, this is a way to ensure that I don't miss out on any subscribers.
And again, the integration with ConvertKit is fantastic, so I get the subscribers straight into my list, and if I sell all my stuff, digital and physical, through that same service, it'll be very easy to keep track of exactly what each subscriber has bought - not just downloads but CDs and merch too.
So yeah, that's why I'm sort of liking this combo.
Wow, that was fast.
So I wrote an email to the Gumroad support, and I've already gotten a response to my questions.
The thank you page feature is coming! They're introducing it as a paid feature next month. So assuming it won't cost several limbs, that'll be great!
There is a hack to at least make a very quick offer at the point of purchase. I can add any text I want to the receipt that pops up immediately after buying. So I can put in some copy and a link there. Not ideal, but should do until the other feature arrives.
So I think this is looking pretty good.
Cool man. If you want to go that route and you find it works for you then that is all that matters. For me the lack of redirect would be a deal breaker. And given that there will be a fee for it, I would personally opt to use something else rather than pay that fee. But I'm sure you can make them work if they appeal to your instincts.
I do not see ConvertKit's features as coming close to those of aweber's, nor would I personally benefit from the way their membership integration works, but again, just about anything can be made to work. So if they speak to you, and you feel like trying to carve out your own path with different tools then more power to you.
Let me know how it goes for you.

Yeah, well, I'm liking them so far, and as long as the fee isn't too high, I think I'll give it a shot. I just find the list management of Convertkit so much more intuitive than Aweber (or Mailchimp, which I've used before). And again, I really like a lot of the Gumroad features.
Anyway, I'm giving it a shot for now, and we'll see how it goes.
Sounds good man. Keep us posted.

I just had an idea about how to make this work, until I get the Thank You page feature.
I can send them a link to some bonus stuff, and do download THAT, they need to go through a thank you page. So they'll get the main product through Gumroad's interface, but the bonus product via the expiring Thank You page. This might even be a surprise bonus that they first hear about on the receipt page on Gumroad.
What do you think?
Hey Eyvindur, to be honest I'm not following. I think the only way to successfully pull of an upsell is to redirect immediately after purchase. You could manually add customers to a second customer list which would send them an upsell pitch of sorts, but that won't be as effective because by the time they get the message the moment will be gone. That make sense?

Yeah, it was s silly idea. Doesn't matter, the Thank you page feature is coming very soon to Gumroad, and the price will only be $10 per month, and some of the other features are awesome as well, so I'll just wait a bit and polish up my funnel and stuff until I can set that up, rather than try to do some sort of temporary hack right now, that probably won't work that well and requires me to set all that up again in a couple of weeks. I still need to do more work on my membership site and my content site, anyway.
I wouldn't need to do anything manually, though. One of the biggest reasons why I want to use Gumroad and Convertkit is that they integrate so beautifully. I can set up automation rules for every purchase on Gumroad and segment or tag customers the moment they buy. I was just watching your video on post-purchase funnels, and it seemed a lot of work to get that whole AB, ABC etc. confirmation and list segmentation thing set up. In Convertkit, I can just tag people within the same list based on everything they've purchased and exclude them from those promotions, so there's no need to be working with different lists for every kind of customer. At least the way you explained it in the video sounded like a lot more work... I kind of like being able to work with one list, where I can tag people based on their behavior, rather than having to split them into different lists.
Anyway, it's going to be a couple more weeks, which I'll use to get everything ready, and then I should have the upsell and the funnel up and running.
Hey Eyvindur, I'm not sure if you are talking about an older IC video or the current MMM videos. But the way I teach it in MMM is to automate everything. Aweber integrates with Paypal and a person is automatically added to the appropriate list when they buy something/ They use lists instead of tagging, but I personally like the multiple lists, especially with their new "campaigns" feature. The manual suggestion was just offered up as a stop gap while you wait for Gumroad to get the redirect feature in place.

Right, I know that it's automated, and maybe I misunderstood parts of it, but I'm talking about the post-purchase funnel video in the IC, where you talk about several different confirmation pages (and I thought I heard you talk about a new opt-in form on those) based on different purchases. Maybe it just seemed more work to me than it actually is, but it looked a bit more complicated than the Gumroad/Convertkit process. Maybe it's not at all, I don't know.
Gotcha, yes, that is an older way of doing it. There are new tools now that allow you to do it with complete automation.
