Hello All,
CD Baby just came out with "Ads by CD Baby" today. I'm trying it out and I'll let you know how it goes. Basically, it's banner advertising on music websites. They say they will post the ad to music fans who are interested in your style of music. The ads will be shown anywhere music fans go on the web. This includes top sites like MTV, Pandora, YouTube, Rolling Stones and hundreds more. When they click on your ad it'll go directly to your CD Baby Store where they can listen to your music and buy your songs.
It's a pre-designed ad that you can customize a little bit. They let you change the text (only up to 30 characters), change the color of the font and the color of the banner behind the font. I've included a picture of what my ad looks like to give you an idea.
Ads will take up to 2 business days to be approved, and once it starts running you can track the progress on your campaign results page. I'm trying out the 12,000 views for $35 package that will last one week, and I'll keep you posted on how it goes.
I'm not sure how to use this to advertise a squeeze page, other than CD Baby will give you the e-mail address of people who buy your albums. Perhaps you could e-mail them with an invitation to sign-up, or ad the e-mails to an Aweber list. Any thoughts?

The ad was approved today. Honestly, I have low expectations for this banner ad. The picture and text aren't the greatest, but it's the best I could do with their ad image creator. So, we'll see what happens. I don't mind trying it out once to let you all know if it works or not. I'll be posting the stats once they're in.

Yeah, I'm curious about the results. My expectation is that it won't do very well if you need to go directly to a CD Baby page, but anything is possible. Do they give you flexibility on that front? Can you advertise your own URL? $2.90 for 1000 impressions is quite high compared to other types of advertising available. But it certainly will be interesting to see. Good luck.

John,
They give a few options on fonts, colors and the image, but not much flexibility. Looks like Reverb Nation is offering a similar deal at the same price. They also have more options including advertising your own website. CD Baby doesn't offer that. I'll have to try advertising my squeeze page using Reverb Nation's ad tool and see how it goes. Designing the ad would be similar to CD Baby. It's a pre-designed template that you can customize a little bit.
So far the click through rate on CD Baby has been 0.1%. We'll have to see if that gets any better. I'll probably not use this again, but I'm always willing to try something first before I move on. Facebook is obviously better.

Awesome, thanks for the info. My assumption is that they could never get a better price then we could get with better-than-the-average-musician knowledge of this stuff, but if they are retargeting their own traffic based on genre there could be a few possibilities. I'll be curious to hear about the final results of your campaign.

Here is what they claim the the ad will do:
Uncovers new fans and customers
Identifies and analyzes consumer behavior to find potential customers.
Finds a new audience you aren't reaching today.
State of the art targeting technology in every campaign.
Finds people anywhere they go
Advertise on the entire web.
Reach customers anywhere they go.
Advanced technology allows your ads to "follow" prospects online.
Reports your daily progress
Get daily updates about your campaign.
Gain quick insight into your results.
Make informed decisions about your next move.
So, sounds like to me that they're using targeting and cookies. The ad is still performing at 0.1% I will have complete stats in a few days.

Here are the results from my CD Baby banner ad campaign.
I knew it was going to be low, but I had no idea it was going to be this bad. I turned it off early becasue I didn't want it to renew. My total views were 11,676. The number of clicks I got were........8. Yes, you read that right, only 8. Half of which I got on the first day. That's a click through rate of 0.07%. (7 out of every 10,000) Which, of course, resulted in zero sales. Also, that's at a cost of $4.38 per click.
So, here's my advice to all of you. If CD Baby or Reverb Nation offer to advertise for you on a bunch of popular music websites, DON"T DO IT! I did it so that you don't have to, and can see the reality of what would happen if you did.
The banner ad is not very customizable. Split testing is not possible. You don't have control over who is targeted. Ads are renewed automatically every week, and if you don't want to be charged again you have to manually turn the ad off. If you stop the ad early, like I did, they don't give you your money back. They put a credit on your account that can only be used for ads.
My next test will be advertising my squeeze page through Reverb Nation's ad tool. They give you the option of advertising your own website. We'll see how that one goes. Hopefully better than this one.

I'm currently running a banner ad campaign using Reveb Nation's advertising tools. Details can be found on my "Advertising Squeeze Page Through Reverb Nation Banner Ads" post on the "Traffic Generation" page.
