Hello,
After the latest training module, I have been implementing the 10 Minute Twitter Strategy for a few weeks and been getting an average of 1 subscriber per day. Back in the days of MySpace, I really got fed up with tactics like these, because it opened you up to so many nasty pieces of work. Thinking the Aweber opt-in process would eliminate these fools, I wasn't too concerned. Unfortunately.... it seems that there is someone who has intentionally signed up for the free download, clicked on all the links to verify.... then rather than just unsubscribing himself has started sending me really nasty, abusive, profane, trolling-type emails. I tried to delete the guy from my mailing list, but he's using a different email to the one he used to sign up. I flagged the email address he's sending from, so hopefully I won't have to see his nonsense again.
I was just wondering... do you have any advice for dealing with this sort of subhuman creature?
Cheers!
Hey Tylean,
Sorry you're dealing with that. Are you saying that someone is actively emailing you over and over again with harassing messages? If so, that's a bit odd and I've never seen or heard of anything like that. Are you certain he came in through Twitter if you can't find his email address on Aweber? If it's nothing concerning then I would just either block his emails or create a filter so they skip your inbox. But if it;s threatening in any way then you may want to take some sort of action.
I have had my share of nasty comments on my ads and the occasional one off email with a snide remark in it. It really is just part of success. When you connect with hundred or thousands of people on a regular bases, a few of them are going to be jerks. These days I tend to find it funny as apposed to upsetting. But it's easier when you have those sales and positive emails/comments coming in to trump any negativity.
My general rule is that I don't pay any attention to negative feedback so long as the positive response is where it should be. And I just ignore anyone who is being ridiculous.

Hi John,
I did manage to track him down in my Aweber account! It was a little bit tedious, but I managed to find another email account that was just too similar (and unique) not to be the guy, so thankfully, he's deleted off my mailing list now. He definitely came from the Twitter crowd (I love all the info Aweber gives you!). He was emailing nasty replies to every one of my automated emails. None of it was directly threatening, but really offensive, unnecessary stuff all the same. I did block him.... but he shifts between email addresses. It's obvious it's the same guy, because they are all very similar email addresses, but every few emails, it would come from a different email account.
Thanks for the advice! It is weird that you could have 20 emails from lovely people saying how much they enjoyed your work and 1 person decides to be a douche bag and you end up focusing on that one person. So I did some research... there are some really interesting psychological studies being done on what motivates trolls and what their personality types are like in the real world. So far they have found - unsurprisingly - that they tend to have personality traits related to sadism and psychopathy. Knowing they are nasty pieces of work in their everyday lives makes them much easier to dismiss.
Cheers again!
Totally. It's an odd thing to read two emails back to back from subscribers; one saying "fuck off and die", the other saying " thanks so much, you've changed my life and will never know how much I appreciate it". That kind of thing happens to me all the time. But I suppose I get it a lot more in the marketing space. It's much more rare in music. But there definitely are trolls out there. And yeah, so long as it doesn't cross that line into threatening, best to just delete, laugh, and move on. And yeah, I cannot imagine what it's like inside the head of some of these people that post some of that negative stuff out there. What's scary is that they are probably all around us and we have no clue.

You will get weird and offensive stuff. I got emails from the Virgin Mary. Kat got emails from Jesus Christ. I got emails from someone targeted by the CIA because of her knowledge of GMOs. And then I got the most disgusting email from some lady... I'll just call it an "anti-proposition." And I get the occasional marriage proposal.
Stuff like that used to bug me, but I'm used to it now. It's part of the wonderful and strange world of the Internet.
Yeah, for sure. There is a part of me that genuinely enjoys it. It sort of affirms that I am reaching a pretty big audience. I once got semi-nude pictures from the mother of a musician. I really felt like I had made it at that point 🙂
