It looks as if Google is testing a move away from showing the traditional 10 listings to only displaying seven, and it also appears that it’s even easier than ever for one site to dominates all those results. This is something that is only in beta from the look of it and it is not appearing across the board. In fact I have only seen a few examples of it myself, but screen shots abound on the web. But it seems to be more of their disappointing trend towards rewarding brands and squeezing out the little guys (IE, forcing the little guys into their ad network). We'll see what happens. Something to be aware of for those of you engaged in SEO. Thankfully we are in music, which for the most part is considered "low commercial intent". That likely means that we will do better than most industries. But I thought teh direction Google is going was worth noting.

And love that the top 10 is almost always cluttered with marginally relevant youtube videos...

I'm a free market guy, and so believe we'll all sort it in the end. Google owns their platform and people will continue using it as long as the value outweighs the inconvenience they seem to gradually be imposing. But I'm won't be surprised if google alternatives start gaining some ground as these consolidation moves escalate

Yeah, WTF is up with all the Youtube videos. I posted somewhere that I recently searched Music Marketing Manifesto in Google and 17 of the top 30 results were Youtube. Crazy.

I'm a total libertarian myself so I hear you and agree. It's just a bummer because Google essentially is the brain of our society these days. If it's off everything is off. I'd love to see Bing (or anything else out there) rise up and take 50% of the market so there was a real checks and balances system in place.

Hey John

  I've been absent from the post again for a while, so I'm a bit late with this responce    ;>}

With Google doing thier stuff, and other search engines (like Bing) on the rise, Do you think it might be a good idea to start trying to do SEO using stats from these other search engines, instead of relying on Google? I'm thinking things like key word tools...or do the other search engines offer that?

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Check out Greg Parke and you’ll have a pretty good idea!

Good question Greg, I think we're all getting sick of Google's changes. Traditionally, optimizing for Google pretty much allowed you to be automatically optimized for Bing and Yahoo. I still use meta keyword tags though I've heard that Google pretty much ignores them these days, apparently Bing still looks at them though, and maybe Yahoo too.

However, Bing and Yahoo send me such a tiny amount of traffic that in comparison to Google that I doubt it would be worth the time to really cater to them. I think if anything, the changes at Google are just reinforcing that you need to diversify your traffic sources. As they say, one is the worst number in business!

So whether it's buying traffic, writing some more articles, guest posting, hanging out in more forums, using social media sites in a way that drives traffic, then this is a good time to start working it.

The best way to make sure you're not spinning your wheels with these alternate sources is to have your tracking in place so you can see which sites are resulting in email signups and/or sales and work with those sources more.

Just my two cents...

Hey Greg,

As Mike touched on, typically when you optimize for Google you will also do pretty well with Yahoo and Bing, so I'd still personally target Google and rest comfortably knowing that I'll probably do well with Yahoo and Bing as well. That's been teh case for me. I actually do have a few sites that have been saved by Yahoo and Bing, where my Google traffic got cut after an update but my bing and yahoo traffic stayed strong. In my main online business I'm currently seeing a decent number of daily visitors coming from yahoo and bong, so I don't think they should be discounted, even though the traffic is considerably lower on those engines.
