Hi guys,

Soren Bebe here. Jazzpianist and composer from Copenhagen, Denmark.

I'm pretty new in this forum and have been looking around. One thing I really miss is some more case stories (maybe I just couldn't find them?), and especially some positive ones. It would be really motivating if there was a list of all members stories, maybe some statistics etc so us "newbies" could get a sense of what this "direct response marketing" approach, which is fairly new to me, could lead to.

Actually one of the things that got me on to this course and eventually into this forum was hearing all the great stories on John's podcast and some other ones as well.

So I'll start out here.

My first experiences so far has been pretty good. I'm driving traffic to my squeeze page (sorenbebe.com) via Fb ads mostly (+youtube and occasionally Google ads) I have set up an automatic email series that ends up in an 2-for-1 offer. Besides that I'm sending out a newsletter each month with news and often free downloads.

Let me try to break this up a little:

Email list:
My email list has increased with about 100 pr month for three months now. I have around 500 subs now. Started collecting at gigs also which has brought in about 40 on two gigs. (Wish I had started doing that before) The best thing about this is all the positive feedback I get back. Lots of emails from people around the world digging the music, buying my cd's, sending pictures of paintings they have painted to the music etc. REALLY overwhelming and seriously motivating! I'm still very unsure whether it's a good idea to try to sell a special offer already in the third email.. i have had a few unsubscribes but also 7-8 sales, but even more who just bought the music from itunes or bandcamp or my webshop already after the first email.
In the long run I can really see this is a great approach to sell and market your music, get new fans etc.

MONEY
I'm spending about 250 $ pr month (ads, etc) and also gaining about that same amount in cd sales and downloads but constantly trying to tweak and test. Im thinking in the long run this is ok but would of course prefer earning more than I spent!!

HELP

Would love to hear some numbers and statistics from some of you out there. How big are your list? What kind of money are you making on it?
Any succes stories out there?

Thanks a lot

Cheers, Soren

Hey Soren,

Great top have you in the forum and thanks for sharing your results so far. Breaking even is a great start. Just remember that even if that's all you do on the front end, everything you generate going forward (future albums, promotions, merch, ticket sales).

As for case studies, yeah, there needs to be more of them. You'll find a ton of posts about sales, etc, but for the most part they are buried in various topics and threads. Unfortunately people tend to post as they encounter issues and try to find solutions, more than to share positive results.

In terms of numbers, things will obviously vary a lot. But what I tend to see amongst artists who have a decent feel for this approach is that they tend to convert subscribers at 20% - 30% and sales at 4% - 6%. The highest I've ever had reported was over 20% sales conversion.

Hope that helps.
